Weird Genes. Haha. I'm such a blonde.

Yes, her eggs are very dark too! Some of my darkest

The hen in the background is actually polish (buff laced) x Silver Spangled Hamburg.

She did lay almost as well as a leghorn until she went egg bound

My RSL lays every single day at the same time every day. She hasn't missed a day this summer at all. Still lays before 9 am.

That enticed me to go get more RSLs - as I hate selling my hatching eggs for eating. I have 21 girls ready to help me out on that front.

Oh and this hen is 2 years old. Laid right through winter and even through a molt!
The back-ground I was referring to was the genetic makeup of the RSL LOL

@_@ In one ear, out the other.
What would that mean for her offspring if bred to a barred rock rooster. Would dominant white affect all of the chicks?
_MG_2995.jpg

Here is the hen I'm talking about. She is in the grow out pen to recover from over zealous roosters. That's her son right beside her.
this hen has dominant white in her(but only heterozygous) this means your chicks have 50 percent of hatching all white(if crossed with barred rock) or 50 percent hatching all barred(with some color leaking due to the nature of the chicks being heterozygous for all of the genes that make a barred rock)
There are quite few different variants to red sex links not all are half dominant white.

Jeff
I have yet to see a "Production Type" Red sex link lacking dominant white(chicks from hatchery) not backyard cross to make RSL

The ingredients for these type of production egglayers is a highly guarded secret as they would go broke if every backyard breeder in the world could produce RSL that lay 300+ eggs a year they would be outta business in no time at all.

Jeff
thankfully any backyard breeder with some genetic knowledge can reproduce this birds, at least the rate of laying, none brooding and confinement tolerance using nothing more than mendelian laws(Years ago I was doing this progect, but my land got raided and lost all of my BC1s)

That makes more sense to me - thanks :)

Marvin there are plenty of hatcheries that offer red sex links that are not half dominant white. Ideal for one has three types of red/buff/brown sex-links where they use different breeds to get a reddish colored female from the crosses. They use either RIR, New Hampshire and most of all Production red males all these are Red columbian patterned (gold color gene) I know you of all people know this, they cross them onto many different breeds/varieties of Silver Columbian (silver golor gene) Columbian wyandotte/rocks, silver laced wyandottes, delawares, Lt. sussex, ect...all these crosses WILL/and do yield red sex links and they have many numerous names for such crosses(I'm not going into all that though) the resullting female offspring will always be an absolute copy of the male used in the the sexlink cross therefore they will look red columbian maybe just a shade or two lighter than the male parent. ALL Red sex links are not half dominant white and these are not backyard homegrown crosses either.

Study up on it here is a world renown site that I never had heard much argument from what they post up on there http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Sex-links/BRKSexLink.htmlhttp://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Sex-links/BRKSexLink.html

Look at the first set of pics right there is says red sex link= RIR male over a Delaware hen there's no dominant white in play anywhere here and not a sign of it on the red pullet either.

Now I will say that more than likey in the world as a whole, there are WAY more RSLs out there that do have dominant white in them than not. Simply because they use the highest producing egglayers in the world to make them (which is some sort of a hybridized white Leghorn) for the female cross and I'm sure the males are some highly guarded secretive production red types.

But there sure are plenty other types of red sex links that still don't have a white nothing in their background genetics.they do have lots of silver(Si) though

Jeff

Herehttps://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/Products.aspx?Category=Sex Links is some hatchery red sexlinks two that dominant white is not used in them:

thats true, but the most productive sex link birds(ISA) do carry dominant white thanks to leghorn blood and these sex links(ISA) are used to feed the world of brown eggs, I doubt Ideal has a more productive or confinement tolerant cross

while feathersite has a good understanding on how and what sex links are(shown in their first pics) if you continue looking at pics, you can clearly see ISA browns and their heterozygous dominant white gene

thats true, ISA browns are geneticaly closer to production type white leghorns than your average R.I.R/NH.

here some battery cage layers, I have the opportunity to save some ISA and Leghorns in the past, gave them a good life and they gave me nice large eggs even if they were concidered spent or no good

my rescued hens...(an attempt to recreate them using a Ameraucana Rooster and doing many Back cross back to production pullets)

I was on BC1 and my land was Raided and I´m still on court battling, dealing with corrupted judges and a flawed legal system
