Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

I have a severe illness...DUMB-ASSEDNESS!
There are those who would tell you that I've had it my entire life, but that's neither here nor there. Regardless, the older I get, the worse it gets. It manifests itself in different ways, which too frequently involve chickens.

Currently, I have a hen camped on 8 eggs; has been for the last 20 days. I should have done something before, but it finally occurred to me that she & her babies might be better off where the older birds can't get to them, in case the bigun's take to killing the littleun's.

Since the due date is tomorrow, had I best leave things the way they are, for fear of upsetting nature's apple cart, or move her to the tractor that's butted up to the side of the grown birds' exercise pen which currently holds a pair of month-old BCM? At least integration shouldn't be a hassle later, since everyone could see everyone else.

Morning Pond dwellers!!!
I found myself exactly 20 PAGES behind so please can someone just let me know if I missed anything important?

Been super busy (and then lazy) around here. A lot of mending, weeding, repairing, etc. Whew! But, all the gates are back in working order, new fencing up along south property line, herb/kitchen garden planted, groomed and mulched, nestboxes reworked (no more kicking out the woodchips and chooks are using them again!), dead fruit trees down and cut up and the field mowed (I even got to use the new tractor!). Oh, and watering, lots of watering, sigh. Still way below average on the rainfall here and windy for days. DH outside right now starting up the pump and filling the rain barrels for me so I can do the smaller stuff while he soaks the trees. Sorry for those of you getting flooded, really wish we could help you out and take some of that liquid gold off your hands.
Took our old flags down and properly folded and the new ones up yesterday. Have to take the puppers for her check up tomorrow and we will drop our flags off at the VFW post to be included in their annual Flag Day "retirement" ceremony of old flags.
That's all our exciting news from this end of the pond and I hear the pump running so I better get moving.
Have a great day all! :hugs:jumpy:frow:cool:

There is no right or wrong answer. I usually let hens hatch chicks right with the others. But I've lost one or two to other flock members also. But integration is much simpler if you let the momma handle it, so its your call. Risk assessment.
Can you block her off where she is? Or possibly wait till they hatch, and move them all at one time? Or if you decide to move her soon, take as much of the current bedding as you can. They like it. lol

I wondered what became of my Charley Brown Christmas tree

I can't remember what happened yesterday! :D
Sounds like you have been productive. I've had a few productive days also, but getting a bit too wet here again.
I've been to flag retirement ceremonies. Do they explain that stuff in schools? I bet there are kids who don't know how to properly handle a flag.

Only way I know to block her off is to board up the front of the nest box she's in (design malfunction when I built them), but she couldn't get out.

I've put a 2nd dog box in the tractor & have the 2x4 wire cut to partition it off. She & one of her sisters like to sleep in the nest boxes, so the bedding's mixed with crap. Going to TSC here in a bit to get another 2x2 to frame out the wire (just used all I have), so I can use it again if I need it, and it'll be ready to go. Hoping Mama ain't nasty enough to jump over it to go after the month-old BCMs, & the BCMs are bright enough to stay on their side. Little ones could easily get through, but Mama should be able to call them back.

Thinking about that rabbit I had as a kid. . omg the poor thing. It probably hated me :lau
I used to put it on a leash and collar drag it around. Until one day it got spooked by something and wrapped around a tree and nearly strangled. A rabbit in distress has got to be one of the most horrifying sounds on earth.
And being a child. . I didn't even know they could make noise so talk about frightening.
I carried it home crying cause somehow I still thought it was going to die. :gigIt was fine. .but that was the end of the leash and collar.
I told my grandpa about it and one day he brought me an old shopping cart from the grocery store where my grandma worked.:)
I had no clue why I would want that silly thing until my dad fitted it with hardware cloth and made it where I could take my bunny for walks again :lau:lau:lau
Dear God. . no wonder I never had any friends :lau
:lau:gig
I had a cat when i was little that would sleep in my doll buggy while i pushed him around our block..
Well, I just had a combo good hatch and bad hatch. Eggs from one source did really well, will get pictures tomorrow.

Eggs from another source, well...my local chicken friend bought them, a variety of breeds, 44 eggs. She didn't have enough incubator space so she gave me some. She's new to hatching too so I've been helping her out. These were shipped so some loss was expected.

However, the seller sent some porous eggs, and one egg was actually covered in gunk that looked like egg yolk and no eggs had broken in the box so he shipped it like that.

Out of 44 eggs, we got a total of five chicks to hatch between us. Her three, and me two. And of my two, a barred rock hatched, looked weak, and then died. And one other egg made it to lockdown but didn't hatch and upon eggtopsy I found it had a severe crossbeak.

And the one I have that did make it is supposed to be an isabella orpington. But it's completely yellow.
That stinks!..:(
What kind hatched?
Only you guys will appreciate my new "plant" :lau

Looks like all my plants Ive ever had! Are they not supposed to look like that?:D
Good morning Pond :frow

The pet talk reminds me... During one of my absences, Faith decided that she'd like a cockatiel once we've moved and are settled (she did do some research, so the species isn't a totally random choice). Anyone here know anything about cockatiels?
See above post...:lau. I used to breed them. Really nice birds, but the males can be a bit noisy. Rand reared birds make the best pets. I am sure there is a lot of info online, or you can pick up a book. :love
