what are y'all saving from the wild to deal with coming crisis?

I got tired of the politics and religion so I skipped from page 21 to now.
My chickens free range mostly now anyway. Trying to start canning. Also I've seen my chickens pick a deer carcass clean in the winter.

Have ya'll with streams or running water heard of the ram water pump. No electricity. Basically 2 check valves, a couple of tees and a 90. It can push water 7 times farther up than it is run down. And if your tank is elevated it can fill all night and have pressure later.
So how does conservation of energy work in the ram pump? Or did I miss that one small detail? I apologize if this sounds snarky I have yet to become fully caffienated today.

I do not think you sound snarky at all. It is absolutely natural and proper to wonder how water can run uphill, seemingly for free.

The way it works is by storing the energy of the water flowing down the hill in a pressure chamber by using a one-way valve that loads that air filled pressure chamber. Just as falling water can turn a wheel, it can also load air pressure in a chamber that will help the one way valve push water up a hill.

[no engineer speaking here, so expert explainer could be much more accurate]

Darn good question, though, as these ram pump critters are often referred to as perpetual motion machines [which are bogus]. The outside energy source that keeps these from being a perpetual motion machine is the energy of the falling water. Very simple. Very efficient.

I first read about these in Mother Earth News back in the seventies.

carcass picking: We discussed maggots on road kill but I forgot about the hens being omnivores. the chicks will go after anything red.
