what are y'all saving from the wild to deal with coming crisis?

Game breeds will brood fairly dependably, just show them a pile of eggs and they sit. They're also compact and efficient little things.
I'd probably start a bug farm and worm farm in plastic bins in the basement and one of those stackable fodder tray garden things. Those would be pretty dependable and easy feed for chickens. We're in Iowa and the winters are pretty horrible here too
If worse comes to worst you could eat the worms yourself :p

In a SHTF type situation, I'd try to maintain 6 hens and 2 cocks ,"an heir and a spare". 2 separate and extremely secure pens, perhaps even housed in the enclosed porch. In a disaster meat and eggs would be a huge help and six hens would provide 2 eggs a day for each of my family. The roosters may be a surprise choice. But if you lose all your roosters, once your hens die you are out of luck.

I'd give the dog mercy with a quick shot in his sleep. No way a pet dog is going to survive an apocalyptic situation without being a huge burden

The goats I'd eat because they'd just starve anyway

Cats can support themselves better than most humans, so I'd leave them to it and they'd likely outlive us all
In any kind of SHTF, you will need a whole lot more than 6 chickens. You will need a self sustaining flock of at least 50 and hope and pray that a predator or thieves doesn't take them all out, or even just your 6 or so roosters. A few years back I lost over 40 in 1 night, and every rooster. If you want to survive, or better yet, thrive in a shtf, you can't do it with just a bunch of preps. You have to live it every day starting today. Keep a garden planted year round, food doesn't just magically appearin a garden, it takes work and knowledge. And crops can fail for reasons being your control. Start hunting now, even it you are killing anything. Learn where your prey lives, travels, eats, breeds. Learn and practice every single primitive skill that kept your forefathers alive, from all forms of food preservation, to medicine, foraging, soap making, metal working, mechanical repairs, wood working, self defence, trapping, everything! 90% of so-called "preppers" would be dead within 2 months of shtf. If you started now and learned all you could, practicing it everyday for 5 years what you had learned, you might survive and make it thru to Reconstruction .

Hey... survival is survival... hopefully the infrastructure will pull itself up on wobbly knees ....

ever the optimist.

If a Carrington Level Event happens, other than military installations, most cities and towns would not get electricity back on for over 3 years, if they ever did and didn't become ghost towns. We simply don't have enough transformers. 90% of all America would die with a year. Out of the 10% that survives, there will be a lot of people that are smarter, more ruthless, with a die hard willingness to survive beyond what most people have in them. Anyone on medicine to stay alive will have one hell of a time surviving. Anyone on psyche meds/mood stabilizers will go street rat crazy within a month and if they don't off themselves, someone will end their suffering if nothing but because they are a security risk to whatever band of survivors they are around.
I'm tired of the doom and gloom for one night.
Just remember, 6 birds, not even 12, is not gonna cut the mustard.
