What are you canning now?

I feel this way too. I'm very attracted to things like gardening, canning, raising chickens for eggs.....I love earthly things, I guess....

Me too, I like independent things, if I can. Less can be very satisfying. I just need to reign myself in on my projects. I can be very ADD about things. Need to focus on one thing and get that done and move on.

We're getting ready to go pick berries. Yaaa.

I'm almost 39 - This is my 3rd year canning. I dabbled a bit before then, but didn't really do a lot until our fruit trees started producing. My grandmother canned tomatoes, but that was the extent of canning in my family. Thankfully, DH's grandma was willing to teach me.

x 3 . . .. and my mom wouldn't be caught dead doing all these things.

You would of thought I was the one raised on a farm instead of my mom.... LOL....
Add sewing to the list of things that Grandma did, mom doesn't, but I do.....

Life is so very funny - - you know? ?

My mom doesn't garden, wouldn't be caught dead touching a chicken, never canned, not into baking..........I do and love doing all these things.

im 27 i started 3 years ago canning. im just like my mommy. She has been out of animals for about 15 years because of health issues but has never put down the home made bread making, jelly canning, knitting, sewing and now spinning. Just recently since her health is back she started thinking about going self sufficient on small scale. ie Angora mini buns, jap quail, bantys, maybe mini goat (nigerian/ angora) and square foot garden. Im really trying to get her to take the plung one that one. Its perfect.

Im 44 and just started back up. My grandparents canned and I did too when I was in my teens as we had a million fruit trees that I would put up each year. We didnt have much money, so i never let anything free go to waste. When I left home as a young adult, I canned a few things now and then. I am excited to be back at it and am interested in trying new recipes (i am a bit of a foodie and like interesting flavors).

I prefer this method too. Try christine ferbers book called "mes confitures" it is a french title but the book is translated to english. Its on amazon.com. Love her recipes, she has basics and fancy flavor combinations too. She treats jam as an art form and is famous for her jams in france. Dont be afraid, though, the recipes are easy.

Thanks . . . I will look into it.

I put up another 17 jars of blueberry jam last night. A friend of mine just moved into a house that has a few blueberry bushes / trees in the yard.
So, the blueberriers were FREE. I couldn't turn them down

I am up to almost 40 jars of jam.... I really don't need anymore.

I need to find a storage place for all the jam and salsa I have made this year. My green bean crop was not good this year.... so I did not get a lot of green beans put up. In another month, I am going to plant and try for a fall harvest.

.

I love free berries! How about freezing some or canning them in a simple syrup so you can use them to bake with later, or canning pie filling?

Well we picked, red, pink and black currants, gooseberries and raspberries. Total cost? $59.50. Total in my wallet $59.00 DD gave me the fifty cents and bought me lunch. She helped pick too. Believe it or not I need to go back to get some more black currants.

I wasn't sure what they (black currants) were when I started to pick them and my mind went like this.

I started to pick them and then thought. What are these? They look like blue berries...... I think they're black currants, but they're not marked......what if I'm not supposed to pick these......but they're right next to the pink currants..... so maybe they are black currants........I better stop and check when we check out and if they're black currants maybe we can come back and get some more....................I'll taste one ......>

phbbbbt.....doesn't taste like blueberry....... maybe it is black currants.........but there's no sign so maybe I'm not supposed to pick these........ So I didn't pick enough and of course I didn't have anymore money and it was late and the kids were getting hungry, so I'll have to either go back or have DD go back and get me some more. :| straight face

So I'll be busy for the next day. I may do the raspberry jam up tonight since that's kinda easy.

See you in a day or two or when I take a break.
