This barred rock was picked out of a group and we had no idea if it was a girl or boy. We’re hoping for a girl. We know from the farmer, that the father of this chicken was a barred rock rooster, but we have no idea what mother. If you guys could give me an idea that would be amazing. Also wondering if the fact that this half barred rock is getting a comb with some redness at 4-5 weeks is indicative of being a rooster or not.

So what breed is this, other than being half barred rock? And what gender?

Thanks for your expertise!

The only thing that I can get is that the mother had a pea comb.
Do you think that becuase its comb is already turning red that it could be a rooster? Or having a pea comb already developed at four weeks also could mean it’s a rooster ?

It's still very young, but if I had to guess I'd say cockerel. I had a barred rock chick (barred rock hen/gold laced wyandotte rooster) that looked totally barred rock, got nothing from his daddy that you could see. As it grows out you may see more coloring showing a mix, or not. The comb doesn't look like pea to me, looks like a single comb, still very small. Hope I'm wrong, and it's a pullet, but that pink and 4-5 weeks makes me think cockerel. I HAVE been wrong before!! :D

Honestly I appreciate an answer! Thank you for your input! I guess time will tell!
