What breeds are "hot" for 2010?

Buckeyes and Delawares seem to have aroused quite a bit of interest this year and seem to be all the rage, which is a very good thing for these endangered breeds. There is a lot of new appreciation for the Light and Coronation Sussex, seemingly due to an influx of new bloodlines. Interestingly there seems to be a large interest developing in old style Rhode Island Reds and Barred Plymouth Rocks, bred up to breed standard and with good color and conformation, and in the case of the rocks, fine tight barring. Because of these I can't help but think that there will be a newfound interest in breed standard correct high quality New Hampshires in the near future - this may be the sleeper breed that will be receiving attention later in the year. In general the circle seems to have run all the way around, such that purpose specific breeds are fading, and the heritage or dual purpose breeds are rising, particularly those with the possibility of providing the better table fowl on a sustainable basis. Thoughts?

McMurray is selling BLRW this year. Their catalog says they are getting them from a "reputable breeder". They must have seen the trend too

McMurry stock is not very good though. I've heard they diluted their stock with golden laced. The Blue is too light.

Any new variety like mille fleur, lavender and buff barred bantam cochins. Also exotic gamefowl like long tails have been burning up the airwaves on here. Heritage breeds are building popularity; delaware, buckeye, Holland and my new fave... the faverolle. What a great bird!! Henry's are laying full steam and have been this whole time. Check out his thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=268082

And
then there's the whole silky, turken, naked-neck, showgirl thing that I do not understand. No offense to allaboutdemchicks

I just like my chickens to look like chickens!!

The trend this year like last will be for the egg laying large chicken. People are trying to save money so many are ordering chickens for there eggs. So bantam while nice will not be high in demand except among collectors. Hatcheries will sell out fast this year like last. People have already placed orders and I am seeing breeds already sold out for the year. So the ones to go will be all colors of Rocks. RIR, production red, sex links, delawares, leghorns, sussex, Nh and the like.

You could never offend me.... I too like my chickens to look like chickens, but my Silkies to look like glued together powder puffs!

I too have noticed that the Marans (esp. BCM) fad has slowed down...maybe people are settling for the dark shade of eggs from the Barnevelder/Welsummers/Penedesenca breeds? Or, like others have posted, perhaps the blue eggs from the Wheaten Ameraucana are going to be more desirable for this year. Hmmmm....

yeah for the favs! though hatcheries carry the large fowl i've noticed a rare few who are carrying the 'exhibition quality' bantams-Purely Poultry and Stromberg's if you look on their websites. but quality is the key since we've seen few SOP come out of any hatchery.
