What could be wrong with this baby?

This chick hatched like this and at a week old it doesn’t seem to be improving. It almost looked like its feathers had been singed, so my kids named it fire. It’s looking like a cockerel too which is too bad because we won’t be keeping it then. And it will likely just end up food. But still wondering what could have been the cause here. Fused to the inside of the shell before hatch?

My guess is marans mix. I had bym eggs from a friend with a large flock of many breeds and roosters were EE and marans.

well, it does not look like an EE because she does not have little puffy cheeks. I'm not sure what the cause is but it's possible she will still feather out just make sure she's staying warm because she does not have ass much fluff as the rest of the chicks would have.

If the feathers look burned in person, maybe they actually are. Are you using a heat plate?

It was like this at hatch. It came out of the incubator like this. But yes we are using a brooder plate.

Not all EE have fluffy cheeks and an EE mix wouldn’t necessarily get that gene either.
