What did you do in the garden today?

Brought my old Poulon Pro 48 inch deck riding mower into the shop today. The head mechanic told me it was not worth fixing given the problem I described. So, I ended up bringing it back home and now am looking for a new/rebuilt engine, or junk it. Don't know yet. Everything (other than the engine) works just fine.

That old mower was mainly used to tow around my garden carts full of stuff, like topsoil, compost, etc... I got my money's worth out of it years ago, still, hate to say goodbye. I've got a bid on a used Murray riding mower that was abandoned at the shop, and that might be up for sale in a few weeks. They put in a new engine for the owner, but he never came back to pay for it. Anyways, the shop might sell it to me for half the price of the new engine just to get it out of their shop.

As far as gardening, we still have a week before we are able to put out our vegetables where I live in Zone 3b. Dear Wife has been putting out flowers and the hummingbirds are starting to come around again. I have a bunch of peppers, eggplants and tomatoes that I started in the house that are ready to transplant outside when it gets a little warmer. Things are looking good for those.

I feel positively cruddy. My mother used to say "You've got the Creeping Crud."
I called out from my full-time job tonight, but I still need to go into town and do an office cleaning.

Finished mowing. Not every nook and cranny, but at least it's basically done. I'll hold off on detailing it for when I feel better. Or maybe next year.

I puttered around and dropped into the soil all the seedlings I hadn't yet planted. Quite a hodgepodge, but life is life, and food is food. They are all poked together in one area that had previously been tilled.

I had invited a young lady who is my coworker to have a garden out here. She was so incredibly excited. However, I knew what happens to young girls when they get so excited about doing their first garden. She bought a planting tray and I donated the soil and the seeds. I sent her photos of her 'babies' as they grew. But she just never found the time to come out and plant her seedlings or tend her little plot. Next year, she'll have learned something and do more than the potted Tiny Tim tomatoes I also helped her start and she took home to her porch. Her gardening appetite is whetted. But there are always false starts. :)

I trimmed a little on some overgrown redbud and willow branches that were dropping heavily down the embankment and into my driveway.

I put up a temporary hanging shelf on my yard swing frame to size up where I want to put a permanent one.

Well, I mowed down my overgrown lawn, most of it anyway. There's one section over the septic drainfield, maybe 100' x 20' that I'm definitely (I think) going to let do it's thing all summer and fall.

After I finished mowing, I saw all that green, fibrous vegetable matter and thought "dang, I grew that. Not gonna let it go to waste". I raked up a 15 gallon storage container full of the grass and weeds and threw it in my compost area. I have a bunch of chicken-poopy fir shavings down there that need to be mixed with some greenery.

I have pallets. I should build an official composting area down there. I have enough garden hose to reach it so it should work.

Chickens got another free range period. Still not ranging out very far. I learned that I can herd chickens. I have a little branch that gives just enough gentle persuasion to direct them right back into the run when it's time. Good to know I have some control. For now, anyway.
