What did you do in the garden today?

My favorite hen... The one with the tumor on the side of her mouth... Is on her last day. 😭 That tumor has grown so large that she can no longer close her mouth or open one eye. She can no longer eat and I'm fairly certain she can't really drink either.

DH is going to put her down for me tonight. 😭😭😭 My poor poor girl. I hate that she is suffering.

I’m sorry to hear that. 😢💔

I use coffee grinder to make fine powder.
I guess I’ll have to look into one of those if this becomes a regular thing then. 🤔

I hate having to give mercy, but it's better than suffering.

I had to put one down a few weeks ago. She got into a fight when her chicks were a couple weeks old and broke her foot. Then her crop wasn't emptying and she lost weight. She got so she was too weak to drink.
When the chicks were 5 weeks I put her down. another broody abandoned her eggs to take care of those chicks. I gave the eggs to another broody and they hatched a couple weeks later.

The frost blankets I ordered from Amazon arrived late yesterday afternoon. I just opened the package today. I was concerned that they might just be like bug netting, but they look like they should work well. My philosophy is “if you’re prepared for something, it won’t happen.” So I’m guessing we just may not get an early frost. I picked a handful of green beans this morning along with a few more cherry tomatoes. Then I watered the plants that are still growing. I also watered the concord grapes. Some of the grapes look ripe so I may start picking those and freezing them if the raccoon doesn’t get them first.

That's both sad and in the end it had a happy ending.

I have 2 grinders. The burr one is for coffee beans while the blade one is reserved for grinding all kinds of herbs - both fresh and dried and to process things that have been through the dehydrator such as roasted hatch chili peppers into powder.

My smallest hen who is probably only 3.5-4 pounds managed to eat an entire vole whole.
Two of our BO hens each found a toad the other night. Both ate them and the one hen I thought was going to choke to death in the attempt did not.
I wonder if they like geckos? These little snack size cuties like to hang out around here in the evenings.

Walmart is price scamming on some things. I saw this on YouTube and found it to be true yesterday. Looking at food processors. An 8 cup Hamilton Beach on middle shelf about $60 and on the bottom shelf about $70. Same sku number. I knew it would ring up the higher price. With a cart full of groceries, you might not notice.
To be fair, the person whose job it is to change the shelf labels when corporate changes the price of an item might have missed one of the tags. Personally, I'd rather think it was an honest oversight than believe every error we catch has a nefarious scheme behind it.

100%. When I was in Costa Rica this summer there were chickens everywhere (they were GORGEOUS too) and I saw them snacking on them and some of them were eating a roadkill that I saw when we were in the car
