What do people do with feral pigeons?

I will have to check out his silo next time I visit. Is there much risk for bringing in disease or anything if I do take from a feral population? Other than mites, I am used to treating lots of new birds for those.
I would quarantine and treat for worms. They likely have them, especially since its harvest season and theyll be feeding on the ground a lot more.

As I have a shortage of hens, I have permitted bachelor cocks to bring home mates from a nearby feral flock. No disease problems whatsoever. :)
Oh cool. I have been seeing one large feral flock in the field down the road from us, only ever saw 2 on my property though. How far do the feral pigeons travel from their lofts to find food?

Do you have homing pigeons trained it fly? If so, fly them while they are down the road eating. If you're lucky, they'll bring some back inside with them.

Ferals will travel up to 10 miles or so, for food and water. They can fly over a 100 miles a day total.

I dont have any trained yet, just got started with some pairs this year and it looks like 2 pairs are going to lay soon. I am just going to try and get as many good breeding pairs as I can this year and then start flying their babies next summer.

What part of the state are you in? I'm just north of Madison.

Good plan! How big is your loft? I encourage you that once you have enough birds, fly your breeders, as there's no life for a pigeon in prison.

Its 128 square feet with no access to a outside pen yet. I have it connected to a 128 square foot pen but got that blocked off for now. Idk what it is with pigeons but I struggled to get mine to drink when I got them. Maybe its because my wateres are different colored than their old owners were? When I first got the rollers they did not drink for 4 days and I didn't even realize until I seperated 2 trying to pair them up and saw them slamming water like nuts. After that I went into the loft and grabbed them one by one and held them right in front of the water until they started taking huge gulps once they realized it was there. I am planning to fly the breeders too once I have a decent number of birds.
