What do you pay for oyster shell and grit?

50 pound bag of oyster shells at TSC for about $10. I can never find 50 pound bag at Murdoch's (where I usually shop) and there a 5 pound bag is about $7. The big bag lasts my flock of 10 about a year, maybe more.

When I used "layer" feed, I hardly wen't through any OS. Now that I use flock raiser, it's a lot more that I go through but still really not much. I will have to pay attention to when I might run out and grab some when it's on sale also. Every little bit of saving means I can enjoy my hobby/ therapy sessions that much more! :thumbsup

FWIW I feed all flock since I have chickens and ducks and males and females and assorted ages.

I've got 10 as well so maybe it will last a year instead of a decade as I had guessed. But that's OK too.

I've just got 9 hens (3 too young to be laying) and 1 cockerel but all-flock is just so convenient and it's the easy-to-use pellets too so it's my feed of choice now. If they need more calcium I've got 55# of it at this point! And my produce exchange group is now saving eggshells for me in exchange for the fresh eggs. My girls just LOVE eggshell! They're going to have all the calcium they could possibly want!

Well, you are in LA, and buying items that are “specialty” given the area, I guess. Also, buying smaller 5 lb bags always increases the price-it’s the same for me in OH, high price for the small bags.

My prices for 50 lb bags is similar to others on this post. Walmart does not sell either item in my area, so TSC or other feed stores is where I source mine. My flock gets all flock, so they go through the OS pretty regularly. I give mine in an elevated chick feeder (plastic jar screwed into a plastic base with holes kept near laying boxes in the coop), and find I have to give more OS every week, but have 10+ on the brink of laying and seems they eat it the most right as getting ready to lay, and then moderate amounts when they are actively laying. We have probably bought 3- 4 bags of 50lb OS in the past 1.5 years, but several batches of chicks to laying pullets in that time.

I agree that eggshells are a great choice for calcium. You can dry them in the oven too if you are storing them for any length of time.

Eggshells alone isn't the best choice though. The benefit of the oyster shell is that it takes longer to grind down, so it's still getting worked on overnight, while they're forming the eggs.

I hate how wasteful mine are about it. I use a baby pig feeder to keep it contained, but they fling a bunch out to find pieces they like best.
