What do you pay for your organic feed?

I thought scratch and peck was soy free??? The main ingredient in naturox is soybean oil.... Conventional soybean oil at that. Our organic certifier will not allow us to use it because Kemin (manufacturer) wouldn't provide a non-GMO statement for it, because it has conventional soybean oil in it.

You should ask Scratch and Peck to switch their fish meal preservative to KN-50ip. It is also made by Kemin, but does not contain soybean oil.

Msds for naturox-

Thanks! I just emailed Scratch n Peck and am awaiting their response.

I thought they were soy free too??? They SAY they are soy free??? Please let me know what they say in the email. I am concerned now. Thanks so much!

It is such a small amount, I wouldn't be very concerned at all. The fishmeal has an extremely low amount of Naturox in it. It is probably less than .0001% soybean oil in the feed, and the soybean oil doesn't contain the hormones and toxins that we worry about in soy anyhow.

That being said, I suppose it isn't technically soy free. That other antioxidant product will get them all squared away, and should be easy for them to swap.

I wrote Scratch n Peck about the miniscule amount of soy oil that GreenMtEric said was in Naturox. Sounds like there are different versions of Naturox. PM me if you want a copy of the attachments they sent me. Anyways, here is their response:

Thank you for getting in touch regarding the preservative of our Fish Meal. The Fish Meal we use is preserved with Naturox IPO which does not contain soy. It is not listed on our ingredient label as it is a component of our fish meal & not something we add as an independent ingredient. I have attached the use statement and the product specifications for your review. We strongly enforce our soy free status & have very strict requirements for our products. Our supplier will be switching to KN-50ip this fall & I would be happy to supply the organic use statement for this product as well. We appreciate knowing that our customers are as concerned about the quality of their animal feed as we are about how it is produced!

Thanks again for getting in touch & please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns regarding our feeds.

I'm wondering what to feed my chicks I'm looking for a corn/soy free option that is available in New England specifically Maine. I was looking into Scratch and Peck but in the long run it won't be economical for me to do. Any suggestions?

Hi Guys just been reading your thread here and I hope its ok that I can say a few words on this subject, most of the Organic feeds we produce are around $20 per 20 kilo bag direct with us, costs will rise depending on distance they have to travel thus putting prices up, then the profit the produce company puts on top, this is the norm for most companies that are producing High quality feeds such as ours here in Australia the 20 Kilo bags in the stores are going around $30 per bag in most areas

Cheers Guys

I buy the non-corn/non-soy Scratch and Peck Layer Feed and Grower Feed and Starter Feed and their Scratch through Azure Standard. Azure Standard has a monthly drop at various locations; you can check with them directly or on their website (no charge for shipping.) Before joining my local Azure Standard group (at no cost) I drove 100 miles from where I live (Sonoma County, CA) to Sacramento, CA to get the Scratch and Peck from the feed store there. Not many feed stores sell Scratch and Peck.

My chickens love Scratch and Peck feed !

BTW, the Scratch and Peck feeds are in 40 pound bags, not the usual 50 pounds.

Other CA organic feeds in pellet form that I have bought in the past is by Modesto Mills.

However, I have heard that pellet form feeds have about a 90 day freshness shelf life, whereas grain feeds last longer.

Pellet will last up to 12 months as it is as it says pellatized by steam and compressed this also kills any bugs etc that was present at the time such as weasels, but always if possible keep in a dry place and in sealed drums so nothing can enter the produce

Thanks Ray

You should be able to find Green Mountain soy free in your area, but I believe it does contain corn. I haven't been able to find any organic feeds on the east coast without corn, but then I am not opposed to organic corn.
