What does "rehab" mean to you?

I think physical first. Although, If you told me one person I know was in rehab, I would think 'wildlife' because she does so much of it...volunteering.

I too am a nurse and my first thought when I hear rehab is drug/alcohol then I might think phyical. This is sort of like when my DS had to do Community Service and I asked my aunt and uncle if he could go with them to the soup kitchen because he needed to do 20 hours of community service. They were embarrassed to tell anyone that he had to do "'community service" and quickly explained that it was for his Confirmation, not because he was a bad kid.

Sometimes the mind jumps to the wrong conclusion when you don't have all the info.

If a job hunter called and asked for my spouse or child, unless it was the result of a previous job search (of which I was aware), I would want to know why the heck they are calling my spouse! Depending on the answer I would choose to screen that call and say something very generic such as I will deliver the message (I certainly would not promise a return call).

Context and past personal experience plays a huge role in how one understands terminology and phrases. When my FIL was in the hospital from a stroke the Dr spoke of putting him in rehab. Based upon the context, the worse construction put upon it was that he would have to live out the remainder of his life in a nursing home (NOT the case). However without that context, or a similar experience in their recent past, I think most folks would assume drug or alcohol rehab. If you provide a context, "he is in rehab from his accident," he is in rebab so that he can re-learn to walk," etc., people will understand your meaning much better.

But you certainly need to consider whether the question is an invasion of privacy. Why would a jobhunter need to know specifically where he is? Even if the jobhunter gives the best construction to it, you have provided him/her with medical information on your spouse that is legally protected information. At the current time I am aware of no laws that protect a person from being discriminated based upon ill health (as compared with disability, which is very specifically defined in law) or substance abuse.

Please know that my response was one of complete distraction. DH's co-workers and my family had been calling all day and I swear the guy sounded just like one of the co-workers. Generally speaking, it is not my habit to inform people of DH's location, even if it's the bathroom.

I was curious because I did say at the end of the conversation that DH had broken his leg and would probably be home sometime next week but he didn't even ask anything about it which indicated to me that he had drawn another conclusion. He, in particular, is not important as DH often gets unsolicited calls from people who think that his certifications mean something completely different so I doubt it's a loss.

Between taking car of MIL with dementia and other issues and DH with chronic bone issues, I hear myself using terms that others either don't understand or think they do but don't. It's funny. I think I need to start speaking English again.

This incident was my first good laugh in a week.

Hey don't kick yourself over it, you have alot going on and bigger things to worry about that an unsolicited phone call.
I didn't want to make you feel that I was being critical of you.
I am always just real careful whenever people call my house, heck I have even said I wasn't available at the moment when I answered the phone because someone was looking for me and I didn't recognize who they were at first.
I took the message and told them I would have me call them back when I was available.

So if someone told you that another person was in rehab then you would think that they were in a wildlife rehab? Just curious. That is unusual.

I would think that they were in a drug or alcohol rehab. Maybe the OP lucked up though and the caller will return the call and get additional information. I think that next time, the Op should just say that someone is out unless she is asked for more information. That way no one can misinterpret anything.

I would think they where working there or taking an animal there
