I went to Home Depot to get a bag of builders sand to try it out.
They didn't know what it was.

I picked up some all-purpose sand as it had gritty particles that would suffice, for now, for grit.
Where can you get bags of builder's sand, and how is it different from what I purchased?

Thanks

Builders sand is subjective to say the least. Its a term they use that builders use to backfill a foundation and grade a lot.Its screened down to filter out large stones and boulders, roots and what have you. Builders sand varies from region to region.
Like OPA said its just coarse sand, something like they put in certain concrete, like if you were doing a patio. Even kids play sand you can use its coarse.

How much do you need to buy? Depending upon the amount you would probably be better off buying from a dirt hauling contractor.

You're right about that...
I'm just trying to avoid a large pile of sand, which can seem overwhelming, on my driveway.
