My wife noticed that one of our Rhode Island Red hen was by itself and facing the wall.

I went over and picked her up and noticed that if you are looking at her from the front, that the left front part of her chest is puffy and bulging out. It looks like it is a little smaller than a tennis ball.

Furthermore, when you squeeze it, it does not seems to bother her at all.

It is very squishy as if it was some kind of liquid.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before?

! Pleased you joined us! I am wondering if it what you are seeing isn't just a really full crop? See if it isn't gone or at least a lot smaller in the morning. Good luck to you!

I think Redsoxs nailed it - that's what I would have said. Is your area undergoing a rash of hot weather, it can be very hard on birfs.

What do mean by a really full crop?

When I went to close the door on the coup tonight she was sitting of the corner of the coup.

Only the left side is puffy; its been 70's and overcast all day.

The crop is where the food goes before it goes to the gizzard to get ground up for digestion. It is situated at the base if the neck where it meets the breast. It can hang to one side of the other. I hope this is what it is. If she starts to look/act poorly or if she is still swollen in the a.m. you might post in the Emergencies - Injures - Cures link. Good luck to you!

Welcome to BYC. How is your hen today?
