Zoos also assist with the breeding and preservation of species. Without zoos, some amazing animals would not exist.

A question: what caused the need for breeding & preserving? Mans earlier intervention that nearly wiped out a species?

All I said was that I wanted to visit at least one zoo in every state before I died. Agree with zoos or not, that is a goal of mine and is not up for discussion. Please quit derailing the thread

Totally serious (about freeing caged animals). Animals belong in the wild with their society. They were here on this planet before we were. Our interventions in their natural lives are their biggest problem.
Darn it! Who left that soapbox here…?

A lot of these animals wouldn't do well in the wild, especially in the countries they've been placed in...
I agree a lot of zoos, and sea life centres especially, are bad, and a lot needs to be done to protect those animals. Especially the remaining orcas and dolphins that we have in captivity.
But some are about protecting and breeding rare and endangered animals. The only "zoo" I choose to visit and support, is a place for primates. Every single chimp, monkey and orangutan there was taken from labs, the movie industry, the pet trade. And they've been given enormous enclosures with trees, and climbing frames. It's wonderful and I love it!
Every zoo is different, some awful, some good. But it would never be wise to free the animals into unnatural climates, especially ones who have been bred in captivity.

This... is not guaranteed. I agree it is a healthier diet when possible, but... No. Vegans and vegetarians can still get sick, especially uneducated ones
