EXCEPT THE RIFLE CAN ACTUALLY DEFEND YOU, AND YOUR FAMILY TOO, RATHER THAN JUST PROVIDE A POSSITIVE ID FOR YOUR ATTACKER

How about both?

I am sick to my stomach to think that people think it is OK to kill dogs and cats. And kind of brag about it, with a macho tone in their writing. I do dog rescue, and I have never put a dog down. Killing these animals is just laziness and cruelty and killing for fun. You don't know if they have an owner and have just strayed, you just want to kill.

Sickening.

Sorry, I am new here, but this is just sick, to brag about killing dogs and cats.

There is one person that bragged, they were corrected - but really you must be able to protect your animals, especially if they are feeding your family.

If a dog was about to attack your rescue dogs, lets say a large dog vs a toy breed... then what? you going to yell "no" put yourself in front?

what if its a feral pack of dogs, vs you and a toy breed?

You gotta go back and read, the person that said 'spilled its guts' was reprimanded- my chicken's life -my child's life- my life, any loss of life is tragic, but if I have to choose- I choose myself, my family my pets who are were they belong, on my property over some nuisance critter that is obviously agressive.

Oh and I rescue also- and none of them are aggressive, three cats, one dog, 20 chicken, 1 bearded dragon, 6 pet rats, 3 hampsters, nearly a dozen gerbiles, three fish...and others- all of these found their home with me... so I'm not 'a' rescue but I do it.

I just read the tone on this thread, and many people are saying things like, "If I see a lynx, or a 'yote, they are dead before there is any trouble." The wild animals were here before I was, and unless I had a lot of trouble, I wouldn't kill them. I know people in Vermont who have free range chickens, and they know that the loss of some chickens is the price they pay for allowing them freedom. What I would do is get a dog who would protect the chickens and other animals on my property: I have a rescue Anatolian Shepherd cross, a big, strong, fearless dog, and he would be a great guard. That way, I don't have to kill the coyotes and they don't kill my animals.

I do realize sometimes animals do have to be killed - where I used to live, a coyote would stand outside the fence and watch the 3 year old child in the yard, and they killed it, thankfully so. But to sound thrilled with killing just gets me sick,
Peace,
Nancy

It is OK to kill dogs and cats. As it is OK to kill any other kind of animal that is overbreeding and running out of room, decimating the local prey animals, spreading disease to domestic flocks or pets. This is called managing the problem. Hunters do it for deer and other wildlife and it is done for a purpose, not out of laziness, cruelty or for fun.

I agree with the OP and his post was well spoken. The growing population of cats and dogs needs to be managed just like any other animal overgrowth before it affects other species, as well as their own. It is no kill shelters that have started this idea of not managing this excess and can only blame themselves when the private citizen is forced to take matters into his own hands.

I had two nuisance dogs of my own this past year that I had to kill. They were pups that I had obtained from a litter of 11 mixed breed dogs someone was giving away. They turned out to be chicken killers and uncontainable except by chaining them up....a cruel life, if you ask me. Killing them was a mercy and showed respect for my neighbors, protected my livestock and theirs and kept two more dogs from showing up in a shelter to be pawned off on some unsuspecting dog lover.

what makes me even sicker are people who takes chances with their pets well being by letting predators come for a second helping.... get off your high horse.

If you keep reading more topics on the predators and pest forum you will see that killing cats and dogs is neccessary. If the livestock owner does the deed or animial control it is all the same in the end. It is a public forum so your going to get a wide range of opinions and beliefs so try not to get too worked up over it. You might want to read this before posting in this subforum. img/smilies/welcome-byc.gif" alt="welcome-byc" />">https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5808

and...

I let animals alone as long as they do not cause damage to my home, yard, animals. I used to spend money on the deterent route, but 1. I no longer have that extra money and 2. it is a short term solution.

If AC will take animals that is an option, but a lot of them do not take cats.Wildlife you have to pay to have removed. I would rather spend what money I have on my family. Again, I only dispatch animals if they cause damage or injury. I am not going to keep replacing plants and animals when I can just get rid of the animal that is causing me problems.

My mom has been complaining about groundhogs eating her garden up for years. I had a groundhog chew through my chain link fence to get into my yard. It was gone in 3 days. I gave her my cage, but she never used it. My mom still has her groundhog...and the relatives, lol. I guess she is growing for them now not herself.

I recall AC telling her that to avoid pest issues(with groundhogs, coons, and whatever) to stop having a garden.

After the neighbors husky attacked my dog in my yard I stopped seeing dogs as harmless pets. I realised that dog could have killed my other one(minpin),or worse-attack my kids and me.

My father taught me to have deep respect for all animals. This means predators and prey alike. But he also taught me to protect what is mine. I will not kill an animal unless it is causing me or my family trouble. I do not take any joy in having to kill someones family pet but I have a responsibility to protect my family and every living thing I have.

So I don't get it- a dangerous animal was killed- "thankfully so"- that's what 99% of everyone else means. Do you think the person who killed it was proud that he/she had to take a life, or that they saved a 3-year-old child?

I do not remember in ANY thread I read about a lynx at all, there have been some starving cougar cubs that have been killed, but the poster was very remorseful for having to do it, they were a direct threat to her, I've seen a couple of 'trap the bob-cat' post but I do not recall anyone killing a bobcat in awhile.

Coyotes are worse then dogs, dogs can be pets, or someone is being irresponsible and released a dog- or it accidentally escaped.
Cyo-dogs are worse- they don't have the fear and they are true predators.

A 'yotie pack vs your dog is not a fair fight - he might grievously get injured- or the coyote might get its leg crushed in his mouth- a crippled coyote is a danger because not it cant hunt - or it might slowly starve in the woods. They might figure out his limits (fence/chain) and one bait your dog (coons do this-we don't have coyotes where I am at the moment) and the others sneak in to kill...

There are a -few- people here that seem to -like- protecting their property too much, but by far the comments and tones are "-too bad this beautiful creature didn't respect human territory", or "OH NO I had to call out a trapper", or "Oh look I put an obviously in pain animal out of its misery".

You've changed what you were talking about first its poor domestic animals, now its poor wild animals.

Wild animals that are attacking human owned animals are also a danger to humans, a wild animals might be a feral dog or a coyote, or a bobcat or a mink or somebody's dumped dog that's forgotten to be submissive or friendly to humans.

-Also the chickens don't deserve to be caught by the throat and shaken till dead, just to move on the the next. a Chicken's life is equal to a dogs to a bobcats to a coyotes- except MY animal is on MY side of MY fence and I (don't own a gun) will protect what is MINE. I have my dog waste at the fence edges, I have a perimeter fence, I have a predator proof run and coop (so far).

But sorry the raccoon that wandered around between 12-2:00 PM every day, walking in circles was elderly/blind/or VERY sick. and I (suburban) called AC and they came out and caught it (catch pole) and loaded it. I asked what they were going to DO with it.
they said: "it will be put in a squeeze cage out of the truck, gassed then given a euthanasia medicine- it will then be checked for rabies."

The possum that was hanging around got hit with the hose at high pressure and ran at - it left alive under its own power. As it was young, and out at the right time and behaving according to its type.

I don't understand how shooting something once- with a well placed shot is worse then letting a starving animal get torn to ribbons by a large dog. Really desperate animals that have no other food source take stupid chances -or they go victimize another family that my not have a dog... Having been attacked by a dog myself (who later was destroyed as it also attacked a child and the owner) I understand fear of aggressive dogs- I would not own one.

The typed word -has- no tone, the words can only be taken at face value. Not everyone that is proud that they protected their homes is happy they had to take a life to do it. I've seen three people on the board with 77,000 members that had "bloodlust"-

*being proud of protecting is different then being proud of killing.*

Some people even rehab or rescue these animals:

We've got some feral cats. People have dumped them. I call them 'ditch kitties'. We have indeed rehabbed these cats by trapping them, spaying them, feeding them and keeping them around to control mice. They're not terribly friendly but if you move real slow and speak real soft they will allow a little petting and they do their job. They're terrified of my birds so we've got an understanding. We have one that we found in the ditch as a kitten who is now a beloved and old, entitled pet. That said, any feral animals come here and attack my birds they will be dead animals or gone animals. I've even given away one of my own dogs because he couldn't learn to stay away from chickens so you know I have no problem getting rid of some strange animal that decides it might be happy hunting here at Alberti farm.
