I know many people have different opinions when it comes to roosts whether it be rounded perches or 2x4. But my question is, which roost is healthiest for the chicken to lay on. I recently saw an article that was very hard to understand because of the wording used in it that said that one or the other could harm the chickens front bones near the breast whatever you call it? Anyway. What roost is the healthiest that will keep your hen living and comfortable for many years?

I have always used 2x4's or 2x6's. My birds prefer the 2 up but 4 or 6 is better for the birds. I have used branches, but never dowels for roosts. I always sand my boards to prevent injuries.

So you mean with the 4-6 inches up (flat) is better? Just curious but what makes it better if that's what you mean?
I have offered the 4 up and birds choose to roost on boards with the 2 up just as often as the 4 up. I have a large shed with multiple roost options. I'm not sure if shape or where the roost or board is position dictates their choices.

If you are in a colder climate like I am than a wider roost allows for better feet coverage by their feathers at night. I have a few birds that are missing toes from frostbite. If you are somewhere warmer it may not matter as much.

Catalpa Tree branch about on southeast side of barn. Branch diameter needs to be about 1/2" and between 4 and 6 feet above ground. During winter a backup location it head of combine used to harvest harvest that is stored in a south facing machine shed.
