We've had many dogs since we married. (58 years) Most of them were the "All American breed" aka, mutts. All of them were 100% wonderful. Our Border Collie, Kelly, was fantastic! I still miss her terribly. Our last dogs were 6 Great Pyrenees, they protected our Meat Goat herd. The last surviving Pyrenees was Freddie. We will never have another dog, it hurts to much to loose them.

Jack Russel, no rats, possum, or racoons allowed in our yard. He will get up and go outside on patrol, in the middle of the night, if he hears a squeak.

Freddie is / was a gorgeous dog. Such a gentle soul visible in his eyes.
I know what you mean about pain in loss. It's a real thing and does make one think twice before getting another.
