Whats considered a coop? Bad neighbor so I need to know....

Called the city animal control

Ok, found out their definition of a coop...

Any closed type housing for the chickens is considered a coop. Barn, box, etc.

If it is just a shelter with no sides, say a board that they can go under if its raining etc. then its not considered a coop

Soooo, I am going to build a little roof ^ on poles and use it for shade and then put a couple of nest boxes under it.

He can not complain now. He wont have a leg to stand on.

Thanks for suggesting I call.

Haha. You don't know my neighbor. He is the one that moves in for a week or so and tries to sue us to help survey his land. He also contacted the sheriff in an attempt to force us to remove dangerous rotten trees near the border which turned out to be his. He didn't like to hear roosters crow but, chains his 4 dogs outside where they howl all night and when they escape they try to break into my pens. I moved the roo pen close to his property to make sure he didn't like the sound.

. He has spread so much vinegar none of the neighbors like him already. He has tangled with everyone from the neighborhood in some way or another.

He doesn't like bees so I am planting hundreds of Rose Of Sharon bushes along the border thick.

Glad it worked out Sockpuppet!

I posted this on another thread....

Yep, I have a bad neighbor too.

We've had someone call on us for "supposed code violations", sorry my grass grew up through my rocks. Give me a break.

I know its my neighbor, but of coarse the city wont tell you who it is.

He's always peeking over my fence and I catch him doing this too. I guess I need to make sure I have my camera with me. He really gives me the creeps.

One day He was trimming his tree and standing on the fence so my dog was barking at him. So when I checked a little later I caught him spraying my dog with water. He was standing on top of the block fence spraying water down at her. He saw me and stopped.

One thing is I dont have to worry about him going in my backyard, my dog hates him. She slammed the fence one time when I saw him peak over. Good dog!

His dog even bit my daughter. Didnt break the skin thank goodness. He had his dog tied in his front yard, but the rope was so long it could reach my property. We told him what happened and so now he shortens the rope. But he lets the dog off all the time to roam the neighborhood and poo and pee in other peoples yards. Ive caught the dog in our garage.
I should have called the animal control when it happened but I was trying to be a nice neighbor and not cause problems. If it had broken the skin I would have called for sure. I think Im now regretting the decision of not calling.

He also parks his vehicle on my property, two inches from ny house. I had to ask him to move it so we could put new windows in. Then he started parking there again.

So I know Im going to have the same problems with him when I put my chickens outside.

So we will see what happens. If he causes me problems I dont think I can be a good neighbor any more. Ive tried. I think I have been very forgiving.

So yes, I think I can understand what you are going through. I wish you luck and I hope that you win against your nasty neighbor.

So that is why I have to find out exactly what I can and can not have when it comes to my chickens. I know he's going to complain

A bantam cochin roo

I was thinking of keeping it inside (like a parrot) and only letting it outside to spend time with the girls everyday when Im there.

I want to raise little baby bantam cochins

Also please consider (bad neighbor aside) that the coop that you build will keep the little chickies safe from predators. This should be priority one. I have crappy neighbors too that will complain and snoop and etc. I followed our covenants and made the coop match our house and safe from predators. This way the neighbors couldn't complain legitamately and my girls were safe. Pic...

Sock Puppet, I would put together your plans and then run them past your code enforcement person to make sure you are legal.

Then I would talk to your neighbor (or leave a note) and tell him that you are building a chicken coop; that chickens are permitted in your area, that you are following the city code and have talked to the code enforcement officer about it, and that the coop will be 75' away and the run 40' away. Let him know in a friendly way that what you are doing is legal, and that you are taking the care to do it the right way. You might even slip in a few lines like "In respect of your property line" to imply that you are respecting his property (you can leave out how you wish he would also respect yours, but maybe he would take the hint? or not, whatever. Anyhow, it might preempt complaining.) Try to be friendly but assert your rights so he knows that you know that you have them.
