when did parents stop parenting their children??

The music and gunfire together made the videos strangely hilarious. Are you saying that they have shot it out with the Mexican Army?

Oh, this is so so true. I bet there is a petroglyph version of "Kids these days!" in a cave somewhere.

My father grew up in the 50's and was a very very naughty teenager. I won't get into it all here, but one of his escapades was accidentally lighting a neighbor's field on fire. When my grandfather found out, he said something like "yeah, so and so still gripes about when I did that to his field at your age" - then proceeded to mete out punishment. So, the question may be more accurately stated as "When did kid's stop listening to their parents?" and the usual answer to that is: at around age 14.

I agree with the poster that said our discipline has been taken away as a parent. So many parents have been in trouble for spanking, yelling, etc. There IS a difference between constructive discipline and abuse.

My daughter came home from school one day and told me I can't spank her because it was child abuse. I corrected her and read her the actual law. She can't say that anymore. I sould not have to be afraid to discipline my child. I have a problem with the people who say "Can't they discipline that kid?" BUT when they see discipline they say "OMG, that child is being abused."

So as a parent, what can we do? What happened to the support of the community?

i guess it was wrong of me to assume it was only the parents fault. i guess i am old school too in my thinking about harming something. i was not a hooligan when i was a kid or a teen. the worst i ever did was ditch school and that only hurt me. i did do my part in telling the stupid girl that it is dangerous to do stuff like that. my car was not damaged but it could have been and that was the point.

They have. all along the border and into the interior. The hard work has fallen to the army. But they have a limited budget, the narcos don't. The army knows if they arrest these characters, the judiciary will just let them go. They kill them outright when ever possible.

The narcos offer the cops the "plomo o plata" deal. They can take the bribe and continue living or they can take the bullet. They also go for the families of cops and government officials. They kill newspaper people daily. They are now killing the mayors of cities.

They never will find out who burned the kindergarten in Hermosillo. Over fifty little kids were killed there. That is a horrible way to send a very effective message to someone.

Last month there was a shoot out just south of Nogales between bands of narcos. When it was over, about twenty people were dead.

They have de facto control of huge areas of Mexico and the southern part of Arizona. This is coming to your neighborhood soon.

Mexico has a very stringent fire arms control law. You will go to prison forever is you cross the frontier with just one spent shell in your car. Now only criminals have firearms, and they have a lot of them.

Better not annoy them.

Welsummer, I am assuming you were a teen in the late 60's early 70's as I was. Back then, drugs did not hold the stigma they do now. Back then EVERYONE did it and everyone accepted it as just what you did as a teen. These days the drugs are so much more powerful than they were then. Which makes is MORE destructive. It was destructive then, as we know now, and it is worse now.

Heather, never assume that parent know everything their child does. There is no way possible for that to happen.

I think it is the lack of consistency. No should mean 'no'. Dinner should always be at a set time and everybody in the family should be there, on time with the tv off. Homework, bath, bed; in that order every school night. That would be a great start.

Children need structure...we all do....
