When I pick up chicks at PO

Do I open the box right at the counter to check for deaths or problems ?
I know this is probably a silly question, but I never got chicks through the mail before, and want to be sure what to do, and act like I know what I'm doing in front of the postmaster.

You should open the box in front of a p.o staff, just in case you have some doa.

I checked mine in the car - the hatchery is the one you call if there are problems. Where did you order them from? I got mine from McMurray and it was very cold when they got here but they were just as "snug as a bug in a rug".

I ordered them from my pet chicken, although they are coming from a hatchery in Ohio. They were shipped yesterday. Although I was never notified of this, I just happened to call and check on the shipping date, and they said they were shipped yesterday, and shoud have gotten an email. I notified the larger Post office in the next town, 20 mins away, since that is the distribution office for our rural PO. and they will be getting express mail this afternoon. If they get there before closing, I can go get them there, otherwise they will be sent first thing in am to my rural PO.

It's so stressful when you order baby chicks - waiting and worrying!!!!!
