When to switch to a layer feed?

My Buff Orpingtons are almost 16 weeks old. They are currently on a starter grower feed. When should I start introducing a layer feed?

I switch once most of them are laying. If you're almost out of starter/grower and want to switch when the bag's empty, you can do that as well, I just prefer delaying it until they actually need the calcium.

You don't have to switch, as long as you have oyster shell in a separate container, it's a personal choice. If you switch to layer and add chicks to your flock in the future, you will have to keep feed separate(not worth the trouble) or you can go back to starter grower, until they are all laying.
I feed 20% starter/grower all the time and have oyster shell in a separate container. I never switch to layer.

I have a flock with all different ages. I only feed an All Flock food with oyster shell in a different dish to allow access whenever my layers need it. I have never had any problems.

I've never had Buffs, but from what I've read they usually start after 20 weeks.
Unless they are squatting and Combs are red and swollen, I would keep them on Non-Medicated Starter-Grower with a container of Oyster Shells separately until they look and act like they're ready to lay or the first egg is found.
Then mix Layers feed with the Starter till the Starter is gone.
If you are switching to Pellets mix some in with Scratch Grains and toss on the ground to get them used to Pellets.

I am currently feeding my 28 months old Golden Comets a Non-Medicated 18% Start and Grow feed with Oyster Shells separately.
They love the feed and give me beautiful eggs in return.
I have a small flock and I can get a 25# bag of this feed, a 40-50# bag goes bad before its used up. GC

I have 6 pullets 2 are just 19+ weeks one gave us 4 eggs this week. I have 1 at 17 weeks, 2 14-15 weeks and one 13 or 14 weeks.
Under the suggestion of BYC I have put ground ouyster shells in the coop, I will finish the new/full bag of grower.

When you start feeding them any treats other then their chick feed. They will need the grit to digest it.
