One of my 23 girls...a Barred Rock layed her first egg Saturday. How long will it take for her to get into a normal laying cycle?

I was so excited all day thinking I would get another egg today. But nope...nothing. I found myself grabbing up most of the girls and feeling their bellies trying to see if I could feel an egg in there somewhere.

I've got to think that since one has layed an egg then the other 22 girls are not to far behind. They'll be 19 weeks old tomorrow.

Hi, My RIR (started at 19 weeks) did the same thing. She would lay and then miss a day and then get going again, and then miss a day. I think it is just normal when they first get started. She will be 22 weeks tomorrow. My Barred Rock just started last week and was 21 weeks. Had my leghorn who is 17 weeks start laying today. I can't say that my RIR won't miss a day again, because it just may happen for what ever reason. Today was her real BIG egg, not a pullet, so that was a great surprise. It was like night and day between the little ones she laid.

Congrats on your first egg!! It is so eggciting!
Hopefully you get one tomorrow.

Hey Southern, well you know I have 12 barred rock hens... they are now 22 weeks, a few of them are laying... I figured too that all mine shouldnt be far behind but they are being stubborn. I think it took approx 6 to 7 days after the first, others it took only a couple of days. So I guess it all just depends on her and when she/them want(s) to lay.

Congrats on the first egg!!! Hope you start getting more soon!!!!!

Are you sure DH didn't "lay" another one in there for you to find????

Congratulations!!!!

First eggs are always exciting.
My pullets (hens) are up to 38 eggs a day now. Only 102 left to go in that chicken pen!

Yep, she'll lay another egg soon. You just have to be patient. It can take up to 32 wks sometimes for them to be on a reg cycle. I'm in the same boat. All my chickens are 22 wks old. One of my SLW was the first to lay on Aug 24th and she layed one the following day, but she skipped 2 or 3 days, then she lay for about 3 days and skipped again. It's frustrating! I have a RIR that is also laying now and is doing the same sporatic cycle. I'm still waiting for 13 more to start laying. Can't wait! Come on eggs!
I'm still excited to find my 2 measly eggs a day.

Okay.... this may sound like a stupid question..... but here goes...... can you really feel an egg in the chickens tummies???? My BR girl has had all the signs that she is going to lay for the lat 2 weeks (red combs, squatting for me) yet NO EGG!!!! I'm so impatient she will be 21 weeks old tomorrow.

I don't know if you can really feel the egg inside or not. I just do it to pass the time.

I was out watering the chickens...yes I water them...their bodies...it's freakin hot, and I hear cackling in the hen house. One of my white leghorns was in the top nest box just standing there then she went outside to get some cold water, no egg. I think she was just practicing.
