We too live in an old house. It's been added onto over the years, but the original house was built around 1870, the old stone building outside has that written in the cement. But I'm not sure, as that is only the old cold storage house. Our front yard has 4 huge Sycamore trees in it and they are like mammoth trees-all over 100 years old we're told. Anyways, we love it-different people have told us stories of it being 2 apartments at one point-upstairs and downstairs....also about the old kitchen having the servants' back staircase leading upstairs to where my son's big walk-in closet is now. The kitchen was redone, so no more stairs, the sink and cabinet is there now. I'll try to find some pix to add at the end of this. Our chicken coop was already here, but not the pens. It was an old farm, but divided up into about 3 properties-so we have the farmhouse and 3 sheds/outbuildings. No barns on our property-they are next door and their owner has let them collapse, sadly enough. The only one left is used for his storage of building materials.
We do love it here, but I wish I had more property, a barn, and a big pond.

Wow Miss Prissy!!!!!!!!!!! That is a great set up. Mine just stay in my walk in closet because it has the stablest temp and is the only place they can go.

Oh Lisa, how beautiful! Porch is just to die for! Your little girl is precious too! I'm like Katy...the old stone building is a treasure!

I agree MissPrissy. I love your setup! Thank you all for the lovely comments. We had looked at so many properties and houses, and then we saw this one and that was IT! 13 years ago and I still don't want to move...if I could take the house, outbuildings, and the things I've planted,I'd transport it further south and onto a property with barns,a pond, and maybe a pool too.
I took a few pix of mine and I'll have to scout out a better place for next time. This is where we are alot, and may get too much attention...out of the way might be better for it and make us forget about it sometimes...lol. Its in our Dining room. It doesn't get any drafts or direct sunlight, but then most of our house doesn't get direct sunlight. I can't hardly grow any plants indoors...the big trees out front shade it so much.

chickenlisa what a lovely house!

One of these days if I live long enough.......

My old farm house has been in my husbands family since 1753. The original cabin burned down and was replaced around 1800 by the house that stands here now.

Hot water and a shower only came to it a few years before we moved in. Inside the house is pretty much original.

That's my husband's Uncle Ben and Aunt Dora outside the house. Ben died at 93 years old in 1972 so I'm guessing this picture was taken around 1915 give or take a few. Inside nothing has changed except for adding electricity in the early 1940's and a real bathroom in 1999 or 2000.

The shutters and the old curtains are still up in the attic. My husband keeps saying he's going to put the hitching rail back up just because...

I've been slowly teaching myself to plaster.

Thank you Sue. Are you in NH? We used to live there...13 years ago. I loved it there...and also love old houses. They have such charm and character... if they could only tell us all of their stories! I love your photos!
