which is the proper way to decomb a rooster

You know I find it amazing that in every part of the animal world there is some human that wants to change the appearance of the animal to make it more to their liking.
Dogs get their ears and tails docked
Chickens get dubbed
There are probably more things I am not aware of.

In the horse world they have outlawed some of those pactices like the cutting of the tendons in a horses tail so that it was always held in an high tail position. And Oh there is soreing and keg shoes and the like done by some Tennessee Walking horse people to make them step higher. This too is outlawed but there are those out there that feel it is their right to do this they claim " it has always been done and it doesnt hurt "and any of the other excuses they come up with. That is all bunk!
Some of you might not know what soreing is but if you do a google search for Big Lick Tennessee walker show you will see some horrific things about how they shoe horses and sore them. No those horses dont move like that on their own, they are an animated breed but if you go to Utube and watch a video about Big Lick you will see something that is very unatural.

My point is.... there are always people that say its ok or it really doesnt hurt or what ever, but the only real question is
Why do we think its necessary. What is wrong with the way God made them. Why do we think we know best. Why do they want to dub a comb for show that is stupid if the chicken is born with a big comb then he should be shown with a big comb.
I completely understand if something has to be done for a health issue but otherwise, get a clue.

hmm i wonder if the same people that dont want to dubb a rooster believes in circumcision of babies...isnt that ( without the reasons) the same thing .. to prevent what they get infections from not cleaning .. & as for chickens from fighting ,frostbite??? (i know show standards) i dont know ..that is what i thought of.
im not saying it is right or wrong ..just a preference of the owner..

* to say i would never do it .. i have boxers & they do not have their ears cropped *

I agree with you whole heartedly Dubbing just for Show is Stupid and unnucessary. Dubbing for Medical reasons is ok. I just hate the way Dubbing is done. Being a Horse owner myself I know what Soreing is, it is Cruel! I agree with you on that, also tying a Horses head up real high when they are pulling a Carriage is also Cruel. Like you I do not understand people changing the way an Animal looks or performs, if God wanted them that way they would already be created that way!

Slather em with vasoline and it should be ok, you don't have to dubb them if they are frost bitten unless there is a high risk of infection. Usually the frost bitten area will turn black and fall off

Okay so we have discussed dubbing, but do you have to cut it all off? When a dogs ears are cut it changes the shape of the ears to make them stand up. What about Rooosters? has anyone ever cut a different pattern on the comb, Made it smooth and round , added some points, snowflake it, make a different design, etc.

Old english are trimmed (dubbed) at about 1/4th of a inch above their head, and must have a smooth round look for a good trim.. moderns combs are completely cut off, Americans can be either way i believe, but i personally like the completely cut off comb as it is easier and i think it looks better.

I believe the comb/wattles is more of a mating system than anything.. Birds use appearances to pick the perfect mate and having a bigger comb/wattle may help in that.. OR it could be that they make them appear to be bigger=more things are scared of them.

Either way though dubbing doesn't effect the mating process (obviously) nor does leaving the comb help scare away anything thats going to eat them, if anything its to keep other chickens/birds at bay..
