White Leghorn, the forgotten breed

Love my leghorns, egg laying machines! They keep our family of 7, plus the neighbor, plus several friends I sell to completely stocked. Wonderful temperaments also :)

I'm with you red pullet mama, when folks ask me what I like, I tell them if I had to pick just one breed It would be white Leghorns. I sell others but, I only keep white Leghorns all year long.

I love my little leghorns so much. I read that they were flighty birds, but our girls are just lovely. I mean, they are literally flighty and fly over our fence to visit with the neighbor's chickens, but their personalities are so funny and sweet. They follow my three-year-old daughter around as though she's one of them, come running to be pet whenever we head out into the yard, don't balk at being picked up, and are just fun to have around. Of course, their egg-laying abilities are super impressive, and there was no training involved to get them to lay in the right spot or leave the eggs alone. I know their brains are teeny, but whoever claims that chickens are dumb have no idea what they're talking about. I sometimes think they are smarter than our dogs... But maybe that's a comment on the dogs, not the chickens. This is our first chicken-raising experience and I am so happy with it. I'm so glad there are so many people willing to speak up for the leghorns! Forgotten breed, indeed!

Here is my Curly Sue (because she has silly curly feathers on her back). She is the nicest of all my 4-1/2 week old chicks-- 3 white leghorns, 4 brown leghorns, 5 EE, 1 RSL, 1 SLW, and 3 SSH. She has the biggest comb of the leghorns, so in the event that we have a career change, "he" will be known as Curly Roo.
