Who Doesn't pay any Income Tax

I thought you were assigned a SSN at birth. Like they gave you one with the birth certificate.

No, you or your parents have to apply for one. You have to show proof of citizenship and birth.

If I'm not wrong, illegal aliens can have children here and once born here become citizens of this great nation..which there parents are clearly not..this is what i was told..so i still wonder about this..any Truth to it??

Free trade is just another liberal lie!

Actually, I'm absolutely certain that "Free Trade" is a completely bipartisan effort, sad to say. It would be nice to have a two-party system...

Edited to add: I am definitely paying lots and lots of income tax. I guess someone decided it was my moral duty to pony up on behalf of everyone else. We just were told that Previous Accountant screwed up DH's small business incorporation as well as his quarterly estimates, and so we owe $5,000 in April, and the new accountant is going to take till May to fix the incorporation bugger-up due to the fiscal year thing.

You're welcome. Hope you all enjoy that stimulus package, 'cause I'm paying for it...

Huh!!! That was true when I got my ss # at 14, back in 1978! Again with DD number one, 21 years ago, but I could not enter her in school without a SS#. But 15 years ago with DD number two her SS # was set up for issue immediately at the hospital.

So I don't know, how long ago did you get a SS#?

You don't HAVE to get it at the hospital. That is actually just a little something they do to be nice. You can fill out the form and they mail it for you. A lot of people think they HAVE to fill it out then, however, and they don't always tell you any different. However, if you leave without naming your child first you have to do it later. You can also choose to do it later. But yeah, they have to have one to go to school.

pips&peeps :

And the small amount of the wealthy (6% of the wealthiest) pay something like 40% of all taxes. The bottom 50% at the end of the scale pay around 3%....................

Sorry Pips, I have to interject here. The spirit of your numbers are right, but it doesn't take into account the percentage of overall income these groups take in.

The top 1 percent of income earners paid 26.2 percent of personal federal income tax in 2006. They had 18.4 percent of the pre-tax income -- averaging $1.2 million.

The top 5 percent paid 44.4 percent on 33.5 percent of the income, and the top 10 percent paid 56.6 percent on 44.7 percent of income. The average income of the top 10 percent was $281,205.

As for the top 20 percent, it earned 60 percent of all income, and paid 72 percent of the taxes.

What strikes me about these numbers is not just the amount of taxes the highest earners pay in relation to what they earn, but the enormous gap between the rich and poor. The proportion of income that the top levels earn in the country is astounding. This doesn't even take into account all compensation (such as stocks), just reported income. Capital gains are currently taxed at 15%, which is far below the tax bracket of top earners. So, if the CEO of Bank X is given a base salary of $2,000,000, but then a bonus in stock worth $10,000,000 the bulk of their compensation would be taxed at the lower capital gains amount. This is common practice in those upper upper earning levels. These are smart people with highly paid tax attorneys who will find every loop hole possible so that their client will pay the smallest amount they can get away with.

So, yes that small group pays more, but it's because they receive more.
