I have 6 hens around 20 weeks. two buff orpingtons and four barred rocks. Their faces (combs, wattles, and around the eyes) are turning bright reddy pind. The suspense is killing me!

I just realized my chickens will be 20 weeks old on our 37year anniversary!

Maybe I will get a great big present!

Today my son installed two windows into the coop. He has helped me so much... so has my soon to be ex son in law.

I am so happy to hear that I am not the only one who is anxious.

Our anniversary is on August 21st, and I was thinking our leghorn will be old enough to lay right about that time. Wouldn't it be neat to get eggs for our anniversary?

If not by then, surely we should have eggs by my birthday (Sept. 4th).

That is what I am hoping for. My "H" did not like the idea of chickens... shoot my whole family thinks I have flipped my wig.

But he did comment on how nice and big the chickens look and how I am taking care of them... so that was nice.

I might as well get eggs for my anniversary.. cause that will be the best present I have gotten in many many years..

Question, how much does it appear that hot weather slows the start of egg laying? I am in Central FL and it is almost 100 every day. We currently have a tractor that is in our garden area, which is all covered by a sun shade and the girls have shade from their tractor top also, and we have now thatched the side of the tractor with palm fronds so a minimum of 1/3 of the cage is fully shaded at any time. It is still hot. I am looking for a solar fan (any thoughts would be appreciated). But if my girls are expected to lay at about 20 weeks, will the heat delay that and make it 25 weeks? Or if they are due to lay at 20 weeks, which might be 9/1 and it cools down, would they lay on "schedule"?

OK, I am officially egg crazed.

Alpha chick, I'm wondering the same thing. We are also in central florida, and the poor girls are miserable and panting even in the shade. I bet you're right that the heat will delay the onset of egglaying by a few weeks. Yesterday, we set out some frozen water bottles in their favorite spots hoping that would cool them off a bit:(

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!! One of our girls, Stella, laid her first egg on Thursday!!!

We didn't discover it until Saturday when we found her on a nest in the yard, sitting on 2 eggs! We were so surprised because we thought another hen would be the first to lay. We took the 2 eggs from her (no conflict) and waited to see what she would do.....she ended up laying another one 10 minutes later! WooHoo! She gave us another one yesterday too. We are hoping that the other girls who are the same age start laying soon.

It was the highlight of our weekend....who knew that eggs would be such a wonderful thing?!?!

24 weeks, MIFChick laid an egg! The others are still making their dinosaur noises, but MIFChick gave me 2 eggs -- one yesterday and one today.
