Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

My RIR has the reddest face and comb (small), then my 2 BR are next with a hot pink setup, then the BO with a little lighter pink than the BR's and finally the EE with a light pink comb. She'll probably be the first to lay!!! They are 18 weeks old, I probably have to wait till September!!!

Good luck to all of you! My 2 girls started laying right around 19 weeks. The RIR is now laying every day AA size beautiful brown eggs. The little runt Black Star laid 3 eggs and none since...her egg factory seems to need some working out.

The reward of eggs is a wonderful bonus of having 2 of the best feathered friends ever. They entertain me non stop!

Happy egg laying to all!!

Our chickens will be 16 weeks tomorrow, so it is a bit early yet. We have heard the egg song twice, and both times it was a rooster. This morning, he started up again, and the whole gang of chickens all broke into the egg song! It was hysterical.

They all had different pitch. It was quite a ruckus.
A few are getting red combs, but I haven't seen any squatting behavior, nor have I seen anyone enter the nesting box. I just opened the box last week (I had blocked it off so they wouldn't sleep in there), and while everyone likes to stick their head in and peer at the wooden egg and golf balls, no one dares to actually step inside.
I go back to teaching in a week, and it is a good thing, because I desperately need the distraction!

I thought I was the only one in our home who was anxious for the eggs to arrive, that is until this morning. My husband woke to to a recount of his dream which focused on our smallest chicken squatting and laying one egg, then another and another and another, then piles of eggs. Of course, the first thing we had to do was run out and check for eggs, and, of course there were none.

However, what we now are certain we have is happy chicks. Richard set up their nipple waterer, which keeps the water cool all day (with the help of a frozen bottle of water each morning and evening. Drinking clean cool water, eating grapes, grass and frozen bread each day. They only need to hear me unlock our back door and they come running.

They are fun and sweet and eventually they will stop being free-loaders!

Mine are 18 weeks and we haven't seen any eggs. We just put golf balls in the nesting boxes on the off chance that maybe they have started but are laying in the trees & shrubs in our yard where they free range during the day - to give them the hint that this is the place. I did find one of the nesting boxes all messed up this afternoon so maybe they are exploring the possibility? We've had a really hot summer so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.
We can't wait - our 8 year old is out there every day just checking!

chickenprincess92:
We have a variety of hens: 1 light brahma, 1 columbian wyandotte, 1 black copper marans, 2 buff chantecler, 2 speckled sussex, 2 barred rock, 2 easter eggers, 2 white leghorns, and 3 welsummers. We also have 1 EE rooster, which I think I will keep. The 5 dark cornish (3 males, 2 females) will go to freezer camp this fall.

I got a large variety because I wanted different colored eggs, and I'm new to chickens so I didn't know which I wanted. So far, everyone gets along fine, even with 4 roosters present, but I have a bachelor pen ready if we need it for the dark cornish roosters (if they start fighting or mating).

I'm so excited about the prospect of eggs!

Even though I am tired of waiting, I still enjoy seeing the subtle changes in the hens each day.

Waiting for our first eggs over here. Hens are 22 weeks, but I'm afraid the Texas heat has the girls much more worried about staying cool these days.

1 - Sex Linked (maybe a Roo)
1 - Americana
1 - Buff Orpington

I really should stop reading this thread! Mostly because I've got a loooooooong way to go before I get eggs. My chickens are only 13 weeks old. *sigh* It's driving me crazy already. I don't know what I'm going to do when they start looking and acting like they are getting ready to lay! LOL
