Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

New layers dont lay every day do they?? I have 5 that are ready.

So much depends not only on the breed, but on the individual chicken. My Buff Orpington has only missed two days since she started laying last Wednesday. I don't really expect an egg every day from her even when she is at full production. The others are kind of hit and miss. It seems that my BR is beginning to lay every other day...she was the last to get started. My one EE laid a green egg last Friday and nothing since. And my other EE laid two, thin shelled, cracked little pinkish eggs, I think one last weekend and one Monday with none since. So, there's a wide variety there when they are getting started. Some breeds will never lay daily.

Still waiting here at 16 weeks, 3 days. I expect it will be close to a month more.

Chicksuk, - I too, was wondering if the chickens would even start laying this year, with the decreasing daylight. I am new to this, but my friend who has kept chickens for years, says that young chickens lay throughout the winter the first year. I would imagine they may not lay as frequently as they would in the spring, but I do expect to be getting at least some eggs this fall and winter.

I don't plan to light the coop, but I am also told that laying will basically stop between November and February (after they are a year old).

Back to waiting....

Yay Chickenprincess! Sometimes they practice the song before they actually lay. And sometimes the other ones will sing along with the one that is laying. Sometimes they do it when they are startled. But it all means that you are getting closer

Hi I have 4 that will be 18 weeks old this weekend and 5 more that will be 16 weeks old this weekend. they all are getting bigger combs and waddles and only 2 of the 18 weekers are getting red faced how long do you think i will have to wait to see the first egg. i will try to post a pic of them tomorrow. I told my professor that i will give him fresh eggs when they start laying maybe that will help me get good grades lol. but the first egg will go to my daughter she has been waiting from the first day we got them.

When I let my flock out to run this evening one of my older girls, 19 wks tomorrow, paced back and forth on the outside roost talking to me like she couldn't get down. She finally hopped down but made me wonder if she's getting close. I'd just love that first egg to come this weekend so I can get the granddaughters over here to to see it. They only live 1/4 mile down our road. Once I know one is truly singing the egg song I'll be taking my meals out there if I have to so I don't miss anything. LOL

Still waiting. 24 week old BOs and SLW. Haven't heard the egg song but I'm not home during the day and my DH wouldn't know what it was if they sang in his ear. Hope no one is laying under the part of the deck I can't get to!!!!
