Thanks to all for your ideas! I don't generally look forward to winter (I hate being cold!), but this time I am getting excited for it! This is going to be so much fun and a great learning experience for my kids!

We tend to get pieces of firewood here and there that are just a couple of inches too long or oddly-shaped for the woodstove, but can still fit in the grill. So I used those, plus all the little twiggy bits you get from harvesting a couple of trees per year out of a woodlot. It would have worked a lot better if my tarp would have stayed up over the grill, but the normal late winter New England weather had other ideas.
