Why do people intentionally break the law?

X2 It is still done this way in Va as well

Most laws are written so insurance companies make a profit and so they do not have to pay out on claims.

Most if not all the folks I know participate in the black market economy they do not pay taxes they buy and sell contraband they buy and sell safety inspection stickers they constantly buy and sell stolen goods just keeping chooks illegally is easy for them they have meat birds only. (AFTER THEY WERE CAUGHT THE FIRST FEW TIMES THEY JUST ATE THE BIRDS) I know the same people have been caught many times with birds they have gotten very good about moving birds around to friends houses. they are not being caught or fined the city is wasting money trying to enforce the law finally the city has decided because of the economy to leave these folks alone . there is a little more to the story but it is a pc kina thingy part of why the city just gave up. that and while AC is over at this place there are "real calls" that need attention .

When I got into raising chickens about 6 years ago now I wasn't aware of any laws prohibiting you from keeping them, several folks around here had them so we took the plunge. Last year the city changed the laws out here (lots of farms around here) Mostly because of all the "illegal chicken activities" happening in the area at the time. Those !@#$%^^& Ruined it for everyone who just wants some running around the yard. Now if you are not on 3 acres or more and the enclosure isn't 150 ft away from alll property lines its not allowed. I called city hall asking them how I could get a permit to keep my chickens seeing as I had them long before they changed the ordinances. The lady said she would get back to me but never did. I never heard from anyone so I went on to build a bigger coop. Once coop construction began the city inspector was snooping bigtime telling us we need permits and blah blah blah. We didn't need ANY permit to build our coop as we kept it small enough so we didn't have to do that. Mr inspector got me alllll worked up and half my flock was temporarily rehomed at a friends farm until the inspector was done here. First they said we needed a permit for the roof so my DH goes down to get the permit for the roof.... Ohhh you don't need a permit for the roof,,,,, ohhh yes you do....ohhh wait we were wrong you don't need a permit at all. Now you see how fun it is working with city hall around here. Buncha babbling idiots over there!

Even tho I didn't think we were illegal back when we started the thought was always in the back of my head. My birds are kept super clan, no smells, the noisey obnoxious birds are rehomed and most importantly all the neighbors just LOVE them. When the day comes and the axe comes down you will probably see me on the news throwing a huge fit about it. Just because other people had bad intentions everyone who truely loves chickens has to sufffer because of it. BS!

I would humbly like to suggest that we all get out a history book, any history books, American, European, whatever, and look at the examples from the founding of democracies. In very few cases did they observe the established order until they could change it. I really don't think thumbing your nose a British taxes by throwing their tea in the harbor constitutes "respecting" the established rules and order. And, as much as I hate to cite the French, look at the French revolution as well. I am shocked and alarmed at how complacent many Americans have become regarding their liberties and the relinquishment of them. I do not embrace lawlessness, but there are a lot of people out there who simply can't abide by live and let live.

I don't know if I'm legal or not. I assume I am b/c others around me have them, including a council member who thinks they're illegal. (I know other council members who believe they're legal). The fact is, they bring my family and myself joy and happiness and according to The Declaration of Independence I'm entitled to that. If somebody thinks that I shouldn't have them, they're entitled to due process. Of course, I will fight back. There will be no more barking dogs or geese making a mess of the park either.

This is America people. We were founded on doing things our own way and flipping the bird to authority.

we are "allowed" 10 fowl on our property, we have 17 BUT some of those are chicks, we will NOT keep ANY cockerels & I am pretty sure that 3 of our chicks are cockerels, when I know for sure, we will rehome them. Yes we will still be over the limit, but we have nearly an acre, the law was written for the average lot owner not a HUGE city lot, most lots are less than a 1/4 acre here so I am not too worried about it, and we have even went on the next block and asked people about them, one lady said she love to hear them crow, I told her about the egg song that we only have hens, and that she is welcome to come visit them and us anytime and I will give her some eggs. lol

I know when I first lived in Arlington in 1978 you were allowed to have 24 chickens and no roosters. They had 3 city inspectors then. Fast forward 32 years. They allow only 4 hens and if the neighbors complain you have to get rid of them. They also have 20 city inspectors who are all trying to justify their jobs. They have added new "nuisance" laws to the books every year including how high off the ground you have to have a rick of wood. It's gone from 8 to 12 to 16 inches. If you don't edge your lawn they will cite you. Beaurocraps!

Well, I do not know anywhere that this is actually a law, as compared with a common curtesy.

Here in CT it is a moving violation and a ticketable offense. It's referred to as "Impeding the flow of traffic" and our state troopers will give out tickets. There isn't a whole lot of courtesy on Northeastern roads unfortunately.

If they are traveling at the speed limit they will ticket them for impeding the flow or traffic while in the left lane? Somehow I doubt that. As anyone they were impeding would be driving over the limit. One can impede the flow of traffic in any lane. We have similar laws against impeding the flow of traffic, but there is nowhere that a specific lane is mentioned.

Not every law is there to protect people and some of those laws from 50 years ago are still law today. In Arkansas it is legal for a husband to beat his wife but not more than once a month.

Then ther are the stupid laws such as a law that prohibits the Arkansas River from rising higher than the Main Street Bridge. How exactly would they stop that?

Maybe we should make it illegal for roosters to crow--if they do, they must ante up for a round for all the patrons at the closest coffee house.

I think that our cities need to take another look at some of the laws that are still on the books. I also think that if you want to own chickens you should check to see if it is legal and you know it is illegal you should at least okay it with your neighbors who could turn you in. If you do get caught, don't complain or whine because you knew it was against the law. No matter how dumb the law might be.

The problem with taking a look at outdated laws still on the books but not enforced is that it takes time away from doing real legislative work. I would expect that a grassroots movement to review and identify outdated laws (that are not or are unlikely to be controverial) might well be able to get some of them removed. Anything controversial would require more work, and is less likely to easily be retired.

And who determines what is "right"? What happens when my idea of Right does not match yours? That is the reason for laws--they are society's means of identifying and standardizing Right and Wrong. Is it perfect? And are all laws fair and just? Of course not, but as was stated earlier, it is a far better system than anything else available.
