I am so sorry, but glad you are finding some alive. Cameras are a good ideal, also I have heard of people using baby monitors.....I think they make some models that transmit some distances. Maybe you could find one on craiglist or freecycle.

Sorry for your troubles. Cameras are good. A baby monitor is only about $20.00 and is very good when AC is running. The monitors are very sensitive (we can differentiate deer walking through the woods across the stream, from raccoons moving around when leaf clutter is dry), at about thirty yards from the monitor's location in the coop.

The chooks start growling, the coon chitters, havahart slams shut. Plus, it serves to amplify the `roo alarm clock' in the morning.

Sure hope you don't give up to whatever vermin is prosecuting you at present.
Retire whatever it is from the target pool and hang in there.

Get a couple of GSD's and put this sign up...it wont deter any 4 legged predators but I find it tends to keep the 2 legged variety away.

In fact it even gave the hydro company employees the willies when they came out to do some work on my meter. It was funny the guy asked what he should do if my dogs get out... I deadpanned him and told him to "RUN"... The look on his face was priceless.

FYI my dogs are well trained and only off leash when they are supervised. Even though I live on 80 acres I don't believe in just letting any dog run free.

I am so sorry this happened and in all honesty I hope it was a varmit of the 4 legged kind and not the 2 legged. I do highly recommend the motion sensor camera. We have one, it's battery operated and takes a picture whenever it detects motion. Got some really cool pics of deer, raccoons and foxes. I did make a mistake once a set it too close to the horse pasture and ended up with about 150 pictures of the horses legs. I guess they liked the flash LOL!!
It wasn't very expensive either. Bass Pro Shops has one there for $69. I think we paid 149 for ours but you can check out craigslist or pawn shops too.

But seriously, when I found my coop a shambles inside one morning and my rooster in fighting mode when I opened the door I bought a flood light and watched closely for several nights. If you cant hang out there a few nights and watch for a while, a trail camera is definately a good suggestion. Put up some beware of dog signs, put big food and water bowls next to the door.

After reading your other thread about the creepy people you bought the house from, sounds like something they'd do to me.

It was just a month ago that someone - no doubt them - posted an ad on Craigslist listing your house for sale using the same pics they used to list the house.

Then finding the key on your front porch. They certainly sound like they would do something like that to your chickens.

You mentioned it's difficult to open the barn door. Is there a light out there to see to open the barn door?

You titled this thread 'Why would someone do this??' Because those previous owners are plain out creepy and sound like they'd be out for revenge.

I too would be bothered by a spouse that just didn't care enough to protect his property, livestock, and family from an unknown threat.

What's taking him so long to get the lock changed and camera up?? If he doesn't step up and get it done, I would do it myself (not that hard - just get the same type of lock and change out the inside) OR hire it out.
