Wildfire evacuation

The chickens and Henry the Rooster (who I don't see as a chicken for some reason) are doing great. They haven't been able to free range since the fire because of glass shards from a broken window. Several slipped between the deck boards and are in the flocks' custom summertime refrigeration zone.

Henry paces now and then, but otherwise they're happy and settled.

I've joined a Carr Fire pet rescue group and just trapped two cats in a heavily burned out area. No singed fur or burn wounds, but they're bony and starving. There isn't a match with registered missing cats, and they're exhibiting feral behavior.

But I'll foster them until their family is found or they mellow enough to be placed. One is solid black with a small white chest patch, and the one I trapped last night is solid gray with the same patch. They are both long haired cats and have very sweet spirits despite their fear and feral behavior.

I've given them foster names: Smokey and Bear.

It's great to hear from you! A rescue group sounds right up your alley and it looks like Smokey and Bear (PERFECT names, BTW!) are in good hands.
Best if luck to all of you ... and if the recovery grind gets to be too much, or you just need to vent or decompress, don't forget that we're all here!

Oh - and I don't think of Herman as a chicken, either. The funny thing is that, if you ask either of our boys, they would agree. In fact, I think Herman's confused answer would be, "What's a chicken?" He seems to see all "two-legs" as the same species. His!

I need to keep this to chickens as much as possible.

Today my husband was told that his company is closing down all stores. He's losing his job he's had for over twenty years, and the options for work are bleak.

Whenever I see the word bleak, I think of beak.

And so now I'm back to chickens. But man, the timing is terrible.

Oh dear! :hugs

Why stick just to chickens? We're all friends, here. If you look through other threads ... pretty much ANY other thread, you'll see life intertwined in all of them. Our birds affect our lives. Our lives affect our birds. And our friends, even (and sometime especially) our distant online friends affect them both. Ramble away. It's all "good and fine!"

Oh - and this may be the mixed blessing you need to make the change you've been thinking about. You have a prime chance - and a reason other than "I can't stand it anymore," to relocate, now. I'm sure there is someone in Redding looking to stay, despite losses from the fires. This may end up being a blessing for two families - one that wants to start over without starting from scratch ,,, and yours!
