Will he survive?

I have a question. If the momma duck wants the baby duck, and the baby duck follows her, why wait a week? Wouldn't younger be better? Are they the same kind of duck? Is this perhaps the momma of this baby? Is that a possibility?

we thought she might be the mom but she has one baby (we don’t know if she hatched just one or if the others all passed) but he is smaller and the size ours was about a week or two ago. we don’t want ours to hurt him

i don’t want him to go to a rescue if he can be released here with the mom (i know it sounds selfish but we have all bonded with him and don’t want him to be gone forever)

If the mom doesn't accept him you'll have to have a backup plan. He definitely won't survive in the wild at that age.
