To you BigZ prayers your way for a successful surg. and a fast recovery.

We have 4 of our 13 girls now laying and this is a picture of the 4 we got today.

The big one is 3.5 oz. That is one huge egg. Is this normal to happen from time to time? I think it's from one of the production Blacks.

The garden is winding down and like most of you we also are enjoying all the delicious maters. Already thinking about what we will plant next year

Have a good night
Go Pack Go !!!!

Ahhhhhh! I came home tonight just after dark to find my favorite cochin decapitated! I seriously cannot have a life if I want chickens. These darn predators are driving me nuts. Of course, it was the little guy that loved attention and my 5 yr old carried him around all the time. She was shrieking when she saw him. This is just terrible. Why couldn't it have been a guinea or that stupid Nikkeii rooster or any of the 45 other chickens running around here? My cochins aren't going to be free range once the addition gets built on the coop. They're too cute and innocent to be running around the yard when I'm not home.

Oh yes, Susie. My production reds would have at least 2 whoppers a week. I never weighed any of my eggs, but I had quite a few that wouldn't even fit in the jumbo cartons. I mean not even close to being able to close the lid. I felt so bad for those girls sometimes.

Good evening! Have I got the pics to show you all! But first...my prayers are with you for your surgery too BigZ! Is this the one where they drain out the cloudy stuff and put in fresh, clear stuff? Wont it be so nice to see clearly again? Funny they would have to knock you out for that...maybe this is a different one?
So today I am scrambling around trying to get the canning stuff together to make some stewed tomatoes. Cant find the sealing ring for the pressure canner...I took it out so I could use the pot for a BWB canner earlier this year.
he.gif
Of course I cant find it anywhere in my (oh so orderly) kitchen. Those of you who have seen my kitchen can sympathize I am sure! DD25 cleaned last so I went up to ask her...thought she saw it "somewhere." I go downstairs and think I might as well get an old chicken or two in the slow cooker so I can make some broth. I do that...then I go and skim the scum from the crock pickles in the basement. Back in the kitchen I start ripping apart all the good places that I might have stashed the seal--no luck. I go back into the basement and lo and behold I find a seal that I bought when I ordered the other one! Go up and install it into the pot and DD19 calls. "Someone is coming to look at Jewel (a horse we have for sale) can you clean her up so she looks good?" AAARGH! And that whole AAADD episode brings me to the pictures I have to show you...but now I am so tired... (I have had 2 phone conversations and texts with 3 people since I started this message) and I cant find the dam^ camera now!!!! It is probably upstairs in my bedroom...
OK--I am going to go out and lock up...I will post the before and after pics tomorrow (if I can find that camera) I swear the thing has legs! Good freakin' night! Terri O

(PS) 2 more quail hatched today...the one I returned to the bator (splay leg) died

ETA: I am so sorry for your cochin and especially for your daughter....hugs to you all!

almost bedtime... just a short goodnight note..

No quail hatching yet..

had those white bass for supper.. our first encounter with them.. to all the people who have told me that they are greasy and no good to eat,,,I would have to say, maybe you just don't know how to cook fish.. we did not have a single piece left over. Even Ken , who is not overly fond of fish, said they were delicious.

There is a trick to getting the fishy taste out of fish.. especially bass..

these I lightly floured, dredged them in egg/milk and back into the salted and peppered flour.. then just pan fried them..

I also made ho-made french fries.. the potatoes were so fresh from the garden that their hearts were still beating..

Annie brought home a German manufactured french fry cutter..
It worked OK, but it was not the ram type I was expecting.. You know, the one that looks like a can crusher.. I guess I will have to go online to find one of those.. the one she brought home is more like a kraut cutter..

Ok, I have to learn to not be so long winded !!! I just posted and lost it all again !!

So here goes again.

Bigz, Didn't realize your surgery was today or I would have wished you luck. So by the time you read this it will be all done and over with !! And no it was not your last supper !!! You aren't getting rid of us that easy !!

TO What kinda horse are you selling? No I'm not looking for another one, just being nosey. Would love to see pictures of your horses. Yours to Wcc.

Sorry to hear about the cochin and your daughters heartbreak ! We lost quite a few to predators this year too and I'm afraid with the cold weather coming it might get worse.
Hopefully we will get our runs finished before the snow falls.
As far as a dog kennel top I don't know if you would need to much additional support unless you plan on tarping it with something which will make a heavier snow load.
Years ago I had a huge dog kennel with the chain link top. Each section was 6'x12' and it just had a divider down the middle. The top was actually just like each side panel. But it was very heavy. I don't know if they are made that strong these days? Guess it all depends if you plan on covering it.

Finally uploaded a picture of my new pony Spice. Here it is. See her one blue eye?

Better send this before I lose it AGAIN.

Not the best picture but you get the drift

Chucks new Toy. Think we can catch some bass with it ? We have to get it on a trailer first of course and to the lake !! Minor detail !!! Hopefully the trailer that is at our cabin under an old homemade pontoon boat that my dad made will work !!

Susie J, That egg is HUGE !!! We've had some like that to when they first started laying. I think the sex links and production types lay a bigger egg to begin with so when they lay a Bigger egg they are humongous (sp). I get some nice size EE's but not like some I got in the beginning !!! Wonder if they make a
X Jumbo carton ??

Jim, that is how my Mom always fried fish. Just used Milk, egg, flour, S&P and fried in oil. I don't think she used butter. We mostly had crappies that came out of our lake in Monico. And of course Northern. Once in a while Blue Gills, Sunfish and Pumpkin Seeds ( I think that is what you call them) And if you fished to deep you got the bullheads. Oh and now I guess there are some Walleyes too. Not to many perch. Pelican lake gets some nice Crappies and Perch ice fishing.
I learned how to eat the pan fish with the bones too !! Whoever said it is right. The best part is right by the bones. I've never eaten one with the head on or with the fins still attached. The first time Chuck fried them up for me and served them with the fins I just about died !!! I made him cut them off !! Talk about ruining my appetite !!
sickbyc.gif
I'm getting hungry for some fish now !! Got my fishing license at Fleet Farm tonight and we registered the boat there as well. Very convient. Saved us a trip back to Rhinelander or Antigo to do it, since the DNR is not always open when you need them to be.

Ok, better send this off and get to bed. My sister is coming up tomorrow and I still have to figure out what I'm going to tell her about the new pony !!! Gee Wiz, don't know why I still worry about what my Big sister has to say about things !!!

Keeping you in my thoughts Bigz, will be waiting to hear from you

PS Don't eat to much Hospital Jello, it will ruin your appetite for all those gourmet home made meals !!

Cute pony, but that white goat is even cuter!

I'll try to post a link later but someone near me is selling a Thai X Ganoi rooster and a Thai x Ganoi x Shamo rooster on Minneapolis Craigslist. $20 and $40. I know SpeeDee delivery will ship for $20.

good morning,

FT. I'm glad that you decided to write shorter posts.. Do you have to provide life jackets for horses and goats?

I have a neighbor coming again to buy some barred rocks.. they were here about a month ago when the chickens were just feathered out.. Now they are starting to lay.. I somehow have to tell them that the price is higher for started pullets.. He is a farmer, and should know this.. He i$ al$o $o tight he $queak$..

I am going to update my price list on craigs list to include the pullets.. then I will make a copy and show it to him.. then I will knock off a couple of dollars, "because he is such a good neighbor".. that should do it, eh?

I put the lone duckling from the C TV out to see if the mama duck would accept him.. she chased it away, and then I couldn't catch him.. He hid in the blackberries.. I told Annie that she accepted him.. well this morning Annie spotted him all alone and tried to catch him.. he gave her the slip, too.. If he weren't so small, I would just leave him,,, but he is cat bait.. He will start to hang with the other birds and I will catch him at the feeding trough..

Hi All,
Sorry I haven't been on, I HOPE (cross fingers) to have the internet back up at the house today.. maybe...
Bigz- good luck on the surgery and speedee recovery.
I am sorry to hear about the loss of the cochin.. I have lost soo many chickens this year, UR, dogs, and just old age...

Good news on one front, Joan found the little Jaerhon cockeral so he and the female are at the house.
I chucked out the eggs from one nest as the hen kept getting off and she has been sitting for a month.... I am giving the Jaerhon hen another week and then am gonna chuck hers..
The hens are trying to eat the eggs... (not the broodies).

FT- TO's mare she is trying to sell is a purebred, WELL broke Morgan mare, with papers...
GORGEOUS mare!!!

Slkies, spare chickens, extra young roos and ducks all went to their new home last monday or sunday.. can't remember now.

Well I gots to go, bills to pay, food to get and all kinds of other stuff.
Laters!!
Carol
