I think my Ameracaua who lays light tan eggs, is laying every other day, but when she does, its twice in one day. I fed them this morning there were no eggs.. I came back this afternoon and there were two eggs, same size and color, and she is separated along with a few other birds from the main flock, the other birds are too small yet to lay.

Morning All! (Grrr.... wanted to be sleeping now)

Tom..... Let us know how your water heater works. I thought about an aquarium heater, but they're so breakable! Last winter I used a heated dog bowel. Nice because it doesn't kick on 'till it gets about 40*.

dkv.... I have a Cannon Power Shot S5IS. Got it a few years ago as a kit and it had filters.... never had to use them yet. (But then again there were times I probably should have.) I would love to learn to use the camera better. I bet I could get some good shots with it! Too much for this "old lady " to learn right now! LOL

I think I got lazy about learning new things.... not good! You almost squashed your dog? I almost squashed the kitten.... tried sneaking out the patio door when I was trying to get Duke in... slammed the door on her! Good thing they're pliable!

TO....LOL I didn't mention anything about Elaine! But, I was thinking allot about her when I posted! Must have read my mind! (How sad is that?)

FT.... about your ride....

Well, I got light frost, Just hit the tops of some of the plants. I covered what I could for last night. The garden is too big and too spread out to cover it all. I hope the weather holds out long enough to get the melons and peppers! The brusselsprouts are just starting! Grrrrrrrrrrrr I hate getting the garden in so late!

I picked about 20# of grapes. There's about another 60 -80 hanging there, and that's what the chickens didn't get! Decided not to make wine this year. I'm making raisins, the grapes have seeds but what we don't eat the chickens will love this winter. I dried 3 trays of sliced tomatoes too.

The soup was OK, I think it would be better with a few adjustments. I also used powder instead of fresh and paste. No rum

Good Morning Cheeseheads!

I have the nipple waterer hanging... Don't think the chickens have learned how to use it yet... Same level of water in it as yesterday. However, I noticed that when I move the nipples back and forth, very little water comes out - I mean VERY LITTLE... Anyone else using these notice this?

I got a hold of a bunch of old 5 1/2' X 3' storm windows... I'm gonna see if I can somehow use them on the South side of the run for this winter. Was planning on putting up 8mil plastic- but the windows will work soooo much better IF I can figure out an easy way to take them up and down.

good morning, everybody must be still under the quilts.. I am about done with my first cuppa.. I let the dog out, but did not let the birds loose yet.. I am waiting for the peahen to venture forth.. I did not see peacock #1 yet, either..

there are a few guineas hanging around the coop.. NOW they want to go in.. No peepsicles, CC..

lots of roosters crowing out there this morning.. I know a few are barred rocks.. processing day is drawing nearer..

I hope the hoses are not frozen.. I did not take the nozzle off. when they freeze, they are shot.. I have a whole pile of them to proove it..

Don't think I could top that but have some pretty good ones but nothing I can post in public. Would get plenty of points and possibly arrested. Getting on here late they say it comes in three's. First my puter craps out now this lap top is acting up, and the micro fried. Man did that stink! TO know how it is to be without water not a fun thing! Get on DH's butt and have him do it RIGHT this time. That ought to improve his mood.

CC ya beat me to the peasicle. Tomski sorry to hear your chicken water nipples are hanging! Need to take the bar off the big saw and take the burrs off of it and really should replace the drive spocket the thing is only 21 years old. POS!

Probably should replace the bar too, but I'm a cheap bass feces! Better get movin running behind.

Morning all--shouldnt be typing--gotta go and cook (and stop at the store cause the "shopper" didnt get me fresh parsley! How can you have fish without fresh parsley and butter? Sheesh! So I decided to catch up and drink coffee...

(man, am I glad DH doesnt frequent this forum!) THanks for the "well" wishes everyone...I just know it will come apart again when I am in the shower and have to run to the basement to turn off the water myself! Sure wish it would happen to DH...then HE could see what it was like...prolly actually use a WRENCH to tighten it then too!

Tom--those nipples are supposed to just drip a little when the chicken puts their beak on it. Then the water runs down their throat until the touch it again. Kinda like a hamster bottle. Do you have the heater in the supply bucket or did you somehow get it in the line? I have everything to make that set up too...yeah too lazy again!

Yesterday we ground another 40 lbs of elk. Today I cleaned the chicken coop and helped cut, split and stack a big dead oak tree. I think I'm a little backwoods.

Morning all !!! I just had a huge and I mean huge post typed up. Took me a long time. TO you would have loved it !!! But it is GONE !!

I even copied the whole thing a few times but the last thing I copied was just a sentence so that did me no good !!!!
Don't think I can retype it. It was a short story (from my viewpoint) of TO's water pipe episode !!!

Oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be !! Was a funny story, at least for me anyway !!!

Speaking of Cuckoo clocks. My Brother in Law started a collection of them. Everytime sister would buy another horse related item he would get on ebay and buy another cuckoo clock. He has a wall full in his garage ! Some pretty cool looking ones too.
Guess he couldn't keep up with her so he bought a Harley and quit buying the cuckoo's !!

Jim, wanna sell a hen??? How old are they btw? I know you won't sell but keep me posted if you find any more on CL hey? Just hens though.

I must be sick. All of a sudden I have this urge to cook and bake. I've managed to bake two loafs of zucchini bread yesterday and made fresh salsa with home made tomatoes, red onions, and corn. Added store bought garlic and cilantro. Most expensive part was the chips. Oh and two days ago made the soup. We ate it all in one day !!! YUM !
Have two more loafs of Z bread to bake today. The recipe I used made 4 loafs. I didn't realize that until I had already started mixing it. DUH !!! I just saw that it took 6 eggs and I thought that would be a good place to use them up.

Ok, before I lose this post I am going to send it and go have another piece of Z bread.

So who's all going to the Southern Bash ???? Oct 1st right?

BBP Where'd you get the elk? DH would be jealous.

I think with the nipple waterers you need to have a small air hole in the top of the container so you get a better flow and no suction (that doesn't sound right

) which would prevent or slow the water flow. Although you're no dumby and probably all ready know that.

Wish I could find my bag of 15 of them. It sure would make chores alot easier and quicker !!

TO - I simply mounted the nipples underneath a bucket and have the bucket hanging... No leaks. However, I still don't think they are using it. I haven't put the heater in yet because I don't need it yet... LOL The heater is a plastic looking aquarium heater with a thermostat that goes from 60-80F. I figure I'll just leave it at the lowest setting. I will let you know how it goes when I finally do plug it in.

On a sad note, Got home from work and one of the Roosters was laying in the coop, dead but still warm. From all the feathers plucked from it, looks like there was a chicken fight while I was gone. I've looked at all the other birds and don't see any damage to them. I hope to hell it wasn't a predator- No signs of anything digging to get into the run and the top is fenced with 1" galv wire... Oh well, sucks but life and death happen. I guess I'll be eating fresh chicken this weekend....
