May I have your recipe, please? I tried making pie crusts using a Martha Stewart "best" recipe off the internet and it was awful!! Don't know what I did wrong or if the recipe was just bad but I'd like to have a recipe that I could rely on.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard from anyone but TO & Cind, & Deb.
I am still up for Oct. 1st, and Aztalan State park works for me if it works for everyone else.
What time?
Who else is coming?

We can't make it as we have a unit that needs to be ready that weekend

and we won't be done in time!

Really wish we could make it but wont be able to. it is the kids homecoming and first soccer game of the year... so game and then parade and festivities around here. Bummer.

good AM,,

two more quail hatched.. they are watching me through the plexiglas door..

I got an e-mail from the woman who bought some barred rock pullets.. she thinks she has a rooster.. I will have to make a trade with her..

Carol, I would give you an americauna, all we have to do is find a way to get it your way.. maybe a network transfer ? I assume you want a pullet ?

I am not going to make it to any more swaps this fall.. dam^ gas prices ..

Annie makes a super pie crust with canola oil..

Dr H, I made pickled fish with northerns once.. I thought they were rubbery and tough.. tasted good, however..
I like to fry northerns with onions and a hint of garlic.. I pick out the Y-bones as the meat cooks.. when it is all cooked, all of the bones are out,,, then I stir everything a bit to break up the chunks, and make sandwiches,, hot or cold... deelish !!

I hope my brother gets a few deer this year.. I cannot hunt anymore..

ON one of my upright freezers, I put one of those draw latches on the door.. It pulls the door tightly shut and locks it.. Had to do that with the grandkids around.. they knew how to open it, but could not get the concept that it had to be pushed shut.. If we found the latch undone,, nobody got ice cream bars for awhile.. amazing what you can teach old dogs and kids..

Cind, I never got robbed.. I thought I was going to once.. that is scary enough for me.. My boss made it clear that if somebody wanted the money, to even help them carry it to their car.. do anything to avoid getting hurt.. I had a good boss..

I think I will go to the boys and girls site and cancel out all of FT votes..
BTW.. nice of you to invite all the girls and not mention anything about the voting.. talk about underhanded.. It is a good thing I am so nosey..

On my way home from dropping my daughter off at school today I witnessed a hawk grab a bird out of the air (I think a dove), slam it on the ground then bring it up into a tree to eat it. At first I thought it was one of my call ducks. But they're all accounted for.

FT- What times are your appts?? I would LOVE LOVE to meet you!! I live just south of it, so you could meet the ponies and horses and chickens!!

Jim I will seriously need to meet you some where.. didn't you say you have an appt near milwaukee?? or something like that?

ANY chance we can move the Southern Meet Up to Oct 8th since most of the southern folks suddenly had things come up?

gots to go
Carol

Good morning once again! I really love my new and improved schedule...these 2 weekdays off in a row are quite nice for getting stuff accomplished. Funny we had the discussion about pie crust a while ago...maybe 10,000 posts back. I am sure you can find all the recipes if you look Elaine and FT!

(yeah right...could you imagine?)

I can tell you my foolproof one...like Cind I have a bunch of ribbons for it and it is easy as, well--pie! Oh man I am in rare form this AM! What you do is get out your food processor. Put in 2 cups of flour (YUK) a little salt and 2/3C lard. Pulse it up until it looks mixed and crumbly. Then add 4T COLD water and pulse x6 or so (it will be starting to get into a ball-if it doesnt, add another 1/2t of water and pulse again. You can go up to 5T) Then turn the machine on and let it run until the ball forms and goes round and round a few times. Take it out and divide in 2. Wrap tightly in plastic and refrigerate until you have the insides made. When you go to roll just make one piece into a disk and put it on your floured board, flip it once, dust the rolling pin with flour and it should roll right out for ya! (two pushes, two pulls, rotate and do 1 and 1...it's DONE) Fold in half and lift it into the pie plate. When I bake I wipe the top crust with milk and then cinn/sugar or plain sugar, shield the edges with foil or a pie crust shield (best invention ever) For the first 45 mins of baking.

Wow, that took a long time to explain...longer to type it that to make it for sure! Now I am getting hungry for pie...I probably would be too tempted though...I do have some of that GF flour left from the bash though...maybe I will try it and see if it works. THe only problem is that my pastry cloth is so saturated with regular flour that I need to get a new one but cant find one that fits my board....since I am "the pie person" for T-day I think I better find one soon!

Hey Jim--I have 3 or 4 quail cheaping away in my bator too...they arent quite ready to come out yet. I am thinking of taking the bigger ones down to the basement brooder..there is no way all the rest of the hatch is gonna fit in that 20L!

If the Southern bash is at Aztalan I am definitely coming

and it probably wont be too cold at all FT! We are having wonderful 70-75 degree days right now....I just love fall! I am wondering if we made the day Oct 2 if more people could come? Just a thought...

Well, I got my stale popcorn(from last night) and half a cup of coffee down...I am thinking about taking a ride to F&F today to pick up a few more waterers and prolly some other stuff

Maybe the canning jars will be on clearance? I sure wish there was a way to preserve zucchini so that you could have it in the winter too. It turns out pretty good when you put it with tomatos; I wonder if I could just can it in thin tomato juice or stock? Anyone ever try? (Jim dont answer that, I know you dont like it any way ya make it!)

I sure dont envy you guys with kids in HS and all those games, practices, concerts and dances! It makes me tired just to type it! When we had 3 kids in 3 schools for a few years it seemed like we were running ALL the time! (because we WERE!) Every night there was something going on...DH made me laugh yesterday when he called to "make sure we didnt have anything going on" on Wednesday because he needs to go back to Joplin to finish up. I said just the usual...a nice quiet dinner at home. I guess habits die hard hey?

My pears arent getting peeled sitting here and neither are the apples...sigh...better get to it! Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

Thanks for the recipe, Terri. I wanted a "sure thing" that someone I knew would vouch for. I was pretty disgusted with the last recipe I tried. I've used frozen and the ready-made from the store but I think they are ridiculously priced for the ingredients -- so I'd rather make it than pay the high price just for the quickness of ready made.

TO, If you're coming to F&F in Madison, stop by for your plant! (and you can meet my birds.) If I know you're coming, I'll be here. I have some errands to run sometime....

Knock on wood, my flock is doing fine. My Pekin/Rouen mixed ducks are growing like weeds and I hope to have most of them processed next month. Man they can eat! I miss my little roo.

Please let me know how he's doing, Carol.

Well, I really must run. Trying to clean out the garage so we both can park in there this winter!

Enjoy the day!
Elaine

TO- The best idea I came up with for the zucchini preservation was either to shred it and freeze it for bread/cookies or pickle it. Not as crisp as a cucumber but still tasty.
My kids are in elementary school and twins in different classrooms and were put on different soccer teams so heading to different places or parent split if different locations. Never easy! 8th might work and closer to madison for me... in response to WCC.
Hey Hurley- the little black silkie that you gave to Carol, that was relocated to me... do you know when she was hatched? Just curious. Trying to get a bead on when she might lay... she is a sweetie... a talker, but sweet. I think the only banty that is laying is the little clean legged frizzle cochin, she lays every other day. My other silkie is older I think ( besides being not right in the head!) and never laid for me. Otherwise my favorelle is still young to lay and between the 6 big girls, I get 3-5 eggs a day so not too shabby.

TO, besides posting at the same time, now you can also read my mind !!! re: zuccini comment..

we have 5 new quails as of right now.. Annie is having me clean out the 2 TV's.. I know her game.. she knows that I will clean them only once and then move the quails out to the brooder in the coop.. LOL she is so transparent.. but she knows me so well..

there will be a lot of nice warm fall days until at least the middle of Oct.. fall is my favorite season..

I do not expecially like this wet period, though.. It makes potato digging awful.. and the one chicken yard is so muddy.. I am thinking of getting a load of granite or road-bed and spreading it around out there..

Carol, If FT and you are getting together, maybe I can send a chicken with her if it is not too much of a bother ?? FT? I don't want to put you on the spot,,
