Went grocery shopping at 10 pm and it just started to snow. By the time I came home I had to creep along at 25 mph! Slippery!!!!
Made a baked egg dish for supper. Came out pretty good but I decided to use up some pullet and guinea eggs to make it.... cracked allot of eggs!

Well, a few more things to do and off to bed!... night all!

Ok, Now this I gotta have. Porky needs a friend !!!! Black & White theme here we go again !!

http://wausau.craigslist.org/grd/2822078978.html

Oh and Cind, yep there are two bantam necked necks in the picture. One is yellow with a taupe-ish color and the other is black with white spot on head. The black will probably be a barred and yellow will probably be a I think what they call a black tailed buff ? At least that is what the Dad looks like.
To me they look like little old men with a butch hair cut and I love their little ears !!

So you are getting guinea eggs now ???? Weird, you and Jim and his geese laying too.

I've been getting guinea eggs for a month or so! Some of the pullets are laying and I have 2 broodies!.... These birds don't know about winter I guess!
lau.gif
I wish Jim would get back on here! One of the Amercuanas I got from him is starting to act broody too! I didn't think they went broody? Either that or she's trying to keep away from George.... she seems to be his favorite.

OK, I can make aprons (I grew up calling them saddles) for their backs, what can I do about the head feathers? Poor girls... that's got to hurt!

Since I had the baby monitor plugged in, I heard my baby peeping on and off all night. He still hadn't done anymore than his first pip. I said screw it, I was going to help him a bit. I was too late. He's gone. I literally went down not 5 min after his last chirp. It's like he was asking for help, and I didn't Coe soon enough. Some how the membrane got injured around pip time and must have bled because it was shrink wrapped to him there. My humidity it at 75% and the rest of the membrane was fine. Could I have saved him if I had known what happened sooner? Coud I have wet down that spot until it came off him? I don't know, but I have no baby now.

Poor Chickie, I hate that when they don't make it out. it happens though so don't "what if" youself to death.

FT how the heck do you end up finding a horse for $50? The one I seen I would have went into debt just buying it?
he is VERY cute, your lucky!

I gotta run too da loo

Good Morning All! Bf4

woulda shoulda coulda. I warned you about the second guessing. It's always hard especially if it's the first pip. I'm sorry!
hugs.gif
Hope the rest do OK! Out of all the ones I had last time there were 3 that piped and never zipped and one that zipped that didn't make it. Sometimes it's a thick shell. But you have to think of it as survival of the fittest if they don't make it out then they were probably weak to start with. I've helped chicks out before only to have them not make it because they were weak. You hope that they do with all the care you have given them and then they don't, think that's even a harder thing to deal with. Your humidity couldn't be any better so it's up to ma nature now.
hugs.gif
Good luck on the rest!

FT COOOL lookin chics! I can understand the B&W thing. I have an affliction for it. B&W motorsickle, B&W cat, B&W chickens.......... Cind Jim was supposed to get his new set up yesterday. I haven't gotten an E mail so guessing there's some glitches going on. He's going wireless so there's a lot of set up time involved. BFF is bringing his DD7 over to sell us some GS cookies and see the chic's and DD25 is coming over with her beau and his 2 yr old DS for supper and to see the chicks. Was thinking maybe I should pound together another brooder box soon it's gonna get real crowded in there. Oh ya Bf4 some more advice. Ya gotta keep the bator as close as possible it saves a lot of wear and tear on you. You know your going to go look anyway.

If you don't have a neck brace ice really helps!

Good Saturday Morning,

Date night last night was a success! Took my wife to a discounted drink at Grizzly's and then to a discounted dinner at Red Lobster for dinner. Needless to say we spent less than $25 for the evening out! Loved it and so did my wife. Back home and slept in a little.

Sorry to hear about the hatching failures and the pain of loving a chick before it hatches.

Today is cleaning day for family fun day, cars and van will get cleaned out and the upstairs chickens will get cleaned as well. Those 4 chicks sure did make a mess of things this last week, we will be cleaning their pen out too today. The 3 Seramas are starting to do the squat and now it is time to get them set up to lay, with roosts and nests.

Hope your days are fun filled as well,

KEN

late morning all

chilly and windy here today, good thing we only had a dusting of snow... 1 less thing to get done on the list. DH and DD are in at the unit trying to finish up getting it clean, I am at home with the boys as DS(6) is sick and laying on the couch very very quiet... ended up taking him to the ER at 3 am this morning as he was having problems breathing- he has a bad cough and cold with a fever, which turned out to be croup and his body reacts differently to it, so they gave him some strong meds and had us there for 3.5 hours to monitor him. Figured it would be best for him to stay at home so I was told that I would stay home with him! Since he is resting DS(9) is working on a puzzle and I am getting some paper work done.

Sorry to hear about the chick loss- it is hard to know exactly what is best to do-as DrH says it's survival of the strongest. We have help out on occasion and sometimes the chick makes it and other times not
hugs.gif

Back to paper work- have a good day everyone!

Bf4m So so sorry for your loss. Yes it does happen what seems like for no reason. I"ve helped tons of chicks, some make it and some don't. I helped out some of the lavender splits and one made it for a day and the other which lost allot of blood made it, go figure.
It is a hard call on when to intervene. I've found out that once they've pipped and have been pipped for a long time helping out works better then helping to soon like I did with my last chick. This is just my observation but once they pip and start breathing outside air that is when the blood membranes along the egg get absorbed into the chick. If you help out to soon the blood will still be on the outside of chick and its "belly button" will not have closed off. If you intervene and that is the case what I've done is hold a very clean finger gently on the "belly button" while anything that is hanging out is gently pushed back in. It goes in very easily. The last one I helped lost tons of blood and is doing great. The one I lost last week that lived for a day didn't lose any blood.

So like doc said, Ma Nature. I think the reason mine weren't zipping is they have the huge vaulted skull and it was to hard for them to zip.

Now the Dutch bantam that I didn't help that never hatched, it was fully developed, no blood in shell never pipped or zipped. I'm thinking the shell was to hard. I've noticed the shells on pipping and zipping chicks is very brittle and is easy to pip but the Dutch's shell was very hard.
The chick was surrounded by slime (with absoulutely no odor btw) I'm thinking because it couldn't pip it basically drowned.
I've got three more in the bator, I'm going to help them next time on the due date or the day after.

Ken sounds like a good night, where'd ya get the discounts? Red Lobster way up Nort ???? I didn't think they had such fancy places in the boonies?

Raim, yoju stumble accross alot of stuff when you put TONS of miles on road trips picking up eggs, ducks, chicks, peafowl etc. Believe me, I've spent TONs of money on some of my other animals. Sometimes Newbie horse owners or wanna be's are gullable !!!! Let me know what you are looking for, I'll keep an eye out for ya !!!
Now I want one of those little black and white pigs !!!!
love.gif

Cindlady, how about matching Amish Bonnets ??? lol

I think all of us new chicky Mama's and Dada's should pick up some strollers for our chicks and bring them along to the bash. Can you see it, us all sitting around the campfire with our strollers next to us with our chicks !!!! Doc can bring a playpen that he "pounded" together so they can have a play date !!!! lol

Bf4m, sure hope things go better for you. If they don't I'm sure between all of us you can get some more eggs to hatch !!!
