Bf4m So so sorry for your loss. Yes it does happen what seems like for no reason. I"ve helped tons of chicks, some make it and some don't. I helped out some of the lavender splits and one made it for a day and the other which lost allot of blood made it, go figure.
It is a hard call on when to intervene. I've found out that once they've pipped and have been pipped for a long time helping out works better then helping to soon like I did with my last chick. This is just my observation but once they pip and start breathing outside air that is when the blood membranes along the egg get absorbed into the chick. If you help out to soon the blood will still be on the outside of chick and its "belly button" will not have closed off. If you intervene and that is the case what I've done is hold a very clean finger gently on the "belly button" while anything that is hanging out is gently pushed back in. It goes in very easily. The last one I helped lost tons of blood and is doing great. The one I lost last week that lived for a day didn't lose any blood.
So like doc said, Ma Nature. I think the reason mine weren't zipping is they have the huge vaulted skull and it was to hard for them to zip.
Now the Dutch bantam that I didn't help that never hatched, it was fully developed, no blood in shell never pipped or zipped. I'm thinking the shell was to hard. I've noticed the shells on pipping and zipping chicks is very brittle and is easy to pip but the Dutch's shell was very hard.
The chick was surrounded by slime (with absoulutely no odor btw) I'm thinking because it couldn't pip it basically drowned.
I've got three more in the bator, I'm going to help them next time on the due date or the day after.
Ken sounds like a good night, where'd ya get the discounts? Red Lobster way up Nort ???? I didn't think they had such fancy places in the boonies?
Raim, yoju stumble accross alot of stuff when you put TONS of miles on road trips picking up eggs, ducks, chicks, peafowl etc. Believe me, I've spent TONs of money on some of my other animals. Sometimes Newbie horse owners or wanna be's are gullable !!!! Let me know what you are looking for, I'll keep an eye out for ya !!!
Now I want one of those little black and white pigs !!!!
Cindlady, how about matching Amish Bonnets ??? lol
I think all of us new chicky Mama's and Dada's should pick up some strollers for our chicks and bring them along to the bash. Can you see it, us all sitting around the campfire with our strollers next to us with our chicks !!!! Doc can bring a playpen that he "pounded" together so they can have a play date !!!! lol
Bf4m, sure hope things go better for you. If they don't I'm sure between all of us you can get some more eggs to hatch !!!
