Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

You guys are my people! Should I be scared? I'm a brand noobie who has had chicken wishes for several years now. And this is the year we're going to do it! I've been steeped in R&D for a while now and thus, discovered this site! ...like ALL OVER the web! very prolific!

We'll be starting in on building our chicken tractor that will rove our 3 rural acres about 40 min E of the state capitol. Is there anyone in our neck of the woods? "Our" refers to me, my hugsband, 4 year old daughter and furbabies.

I spoke with Rebecca today at nearby Abendroth Hatchery and she was so helpful. I feel like I'm in good hands with her. Right now I'm thinking 1 Silkie, 2 Buff Orpingtons and an Easter Egger :)
I look forward to getting to know y'all...
See ya!

WELCOME MxMarg!!
I am just south of Madison in Brooklyn/Oregon, and I can help enable you with lots of chickens!! LOL..
Just ask KristiP and Terry/TO.

Well I had an interesting day, it started with me on the phone to the Dept of Labor in ND, and ending with a phone call to an attorney in ND, then sending a strongly worded email to my former employers, that they had better start sending me my checks that are due me or its small claims court.
Then off to the hay auction with a neighbor and friend, we scored 8 huge round bales that were mistakenly being sold as "bedding", as the low bids were coming in, we were very close to the auctioneer , and a nice man behind him is pulling out handfuls of hay from the middle of the bales and he says as if trying to get the auctioneer's attention.. "THis is HAY!!"... And with a few swings of my number we got 8 round bales of hay at 25 dollars apiece!!!
celebrate.gif

Called the handy man to come haul them home, I then had to go get my truck, get gas in it, and before all of that.. stop in at the house and get the insurance on it so I can drive it.
I go and get the bale carrier back to the auction site, get back, feed the chickens, and find that I have apparently been hoarding the chicken eggs in joan's fridge. So I stop at a neighbor's place to offer them some eggs, go to start the truck.. and click, nothing, darkness. So back up to neighbor's porch, explain the situation, he very kindly offers me a ride home.
DH and I go to jump start it, the battery was apparently low, but still won't turn over...
(on a side note- my truck has a push button thingy, and a weird pin that is pushed in/pulled out to turn the electrical system off and on).
So my truck is at the neighbors til morning, my half of the bale purchase went from 4 to 2 as Joan decided to buy 2 from me and 2 from our friend and neighbor. Which is fine since I owed her back board fees.
I have to go get our nieces dog for 2 hours tomorrow since its the birthday where all her little friends come over for a "kids" party, I have to try to get my truck back to the house, and bring the rest of the eggs to those who we know want them.
The upside to this is I found another serama egg today so I will have 1 more for the incubator at KristiP's!!

Whew am I glad MX doesn't know our abbreviations yet...
I might have forgotten to mention how some people on here are animal addicts too... (no names to protect the guilty... Right TO and French Tosst ?)

HEY!!!
somad.gif

I have weirder creatures and am a serious animal addict...
5 Tarantulas, 1 snake, 7 parakeets, a pet rat, 2 dogs, 3 horses, 2 ponies, 4 chicks in my 'bonus" room, and it seems 1 of each kind of chicken they breed, I "collect" free chickens, feed them for a while then give them away!!
At one time I had over 40 tarantulas, about 40 ball pythons I took in as a rescue, raised store bought gold fish and koi and then sold them at a fish auction. .. yes in Milwaukee they have them!!
LOL

And there are some crazies on here that get reptiles and other gross creepy crawlies... Eh, WCC?

Whew !! Is right, I'm glad I met up with Wcc at Joans instead of at her house !! I wouldn't have wanted to come across a loose snake or two !!!!
ep.gif

Yes, I forgot to mention WCC. She is not an innocent by stander !!! She tries to enable me by calling and reading me the Craigs Lists ads. Fortunately most of the "free" chickens are to far away !!!

I don't remember what happened with the last phone call she made to me. Showgirls and frizzles. i remember emailing the people from the ad but they ???? I'm drawing a blank.

I found another ad for lavender silkies and showgirls on CL. Finally got ahold of the person selling them but found out that they may be mixed with other colors so I passed on them. I just don't have the room to start another color. She is going to the Fon Du Lac swap tomorrow and is going to call me if she finds a lavender silkie hen or lavender or black showgirl hen for me.
I told her to join us here on Cheeseheads so we might get another Young One on here !!! She's young enough to make Bf4m feel old !! LOL

As far as the classroom hatch goes, I'm getting some lavender split silkie eggs from another BYC member for the third graders to hatch out. Hopefully they do good.
I might include some paint silkie eggs if the hens decide to start laying by next week.

Plus I might get some lavender Orp Eggs from someone in Bruce Crossing since my two Lav Orps aren't paying much attention to each other. Jim I think you may know this person. She sent me instructions for hatching in a Styrofoam Incubator and your name was on the original !!!
Boy you get around !!!
gig.gif
How's that dog of yours doing. Is she PG ?? Inquiring minds want to know. Not that I need any more dogs, I don't want to be known as a hoarder or anything !!!!

Oh, BF4m, none of us had this many critters at your young age, nor did we have as many as you do !!! Trust me at the rate you are going you will have us all beat !!!
gig.gif

Think maybe I should start a new thread, CheeseHeads Chicken Anonymous !!!

To, nice house chicken !!!

Good Night all,

Good Morning Everybody! Yes Bl4 I WAS as innocent as Opie at that age. Think it was a typo getting lumped in with the trouble makers. I'm not that way. Really honest!

Lovin the weather forecast! But it has me thinkin the perch will run early this year. Might have to go up by myself for a few days soon. Need to get my neighbor up there to call me when they run. Getting antsy to pull the fence out of the garden and hook the plow up. There will be a leaning curve there. Never plowed have done some discing, sickle mowing, and raking. Need to talk to Donny to find a section of spring drag. Have a lot of work planned for the Fiord this year. Need to cut some roads out back to gain access to some deadstands and have some stumps to remove. The frost has to come out first, tires just spin like being on ice. Huh! Jim those royal palms look pretty neat! Like FT said did Nora take? Hope your gonna be a G'pa again! So much more but as usual it's gone. Pft!

Good Morning My Favorite Chicken folks!
frow.gif

Been between the couch and bed for the last four days with a HE11 of a cold/bronchitis - a few days of R&R and a round of antibiotics seem to have everything under control - with the exception of the constant nose running and sneezing. I've never had a head cold that made me sneeze so much!

WOW - had a lot of posts to go though....

I've got 38 (multi colored) Coturnix Quail and 10 Chinese blue breasted buttons in the incubator on lock-down. Haven't really checked the viability of them, I'll just wait and see what happens. I really didn't want the buttons, but the lady I got the Coturnix from sent me the buttons as "extras." My luck, the buttons will be the only ones that hatch. Anybody here want some Blue Breasted Buttons?

Started back to work at the Stone/Granite shop... Although I only worked 1 1/2 day due to this "Spring Crud" - Boy do we have a lot of orders that came in during the winter... Memorial Day is to us like Christmas is to Walmart! LOL

Lot's of neat pics Everyone - Jim, Seems you really are getting the hang of the new computer!
thumbsup.gif

I don't know if I said anything before, but I have a place where I can get some 3'H X4'D X10'L mink cages. Pretty much all I want. If anyone is interested, I'll try and get some photo's up. I'm sure my buddy won't mind if I grab an extra few for friends.... I was thinking that they would make excellent breeder/broader/quail pens... or Rabbit/Mink...etc. I probably won't get out to the farm until next weekend though - So I'll do a count on how many are still in decent shape. He used his tractor bucket and just kinda "piled' them up. Of course first choice goes to Terri (irt the woodstove)... :)

Other than that, not much happening up here in Yooper land. Looking forward to the bash this year - You won't be able to miss me, I'll be the good looking, delightfully plump fella, standing next to his camper all by his lonesome with a cold beer in his hand. ....LOL

On a serious note - Welcome to all the new faces and I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend!

Laters....

Good Morning. I can't wait for the temps to rise today. DH has already been out working in the yard. He built a backstop so I can play with my new gun :). I plan to get the chicken coop and run done today. I hope everyone has a good day :)

Morning all!
Wow! Lots to catch up on! I see I misses the "Lists"! Whoo Hooo! I must be doing something right! LOL!!
The Girls are all good but I have an yuckie URI/mycoplasma thing running through the flock. I tried some Oxytet but that did no good so I went to F&F and got some Tylan/Tylosin. Shot up the Barnies since I figured if the Tylosin killed them, then those were the hens I did not mind loosing. Kinda sad I know but there you have it. So out of the four, three bounced right back but the fourth was still a little under the weather. Today she seems way better so I will give the others their shots. I wanted to make sure the Tylosin was the right "cure" and so far so good!! The only down side is that I will have to toss eggs for about a month. As well better to have happy healthy chickens. Thinking on that, I should worm the hens since I have to toss eggs......

The Rabbits are good and I'm planning on making/building a rabbitry for them. I saw these really cool powder coated dog kennel panels as Maynards....I think I will make a portable rabbitry, then I can move it around.

What else...Oh yes! I saw a Red Wing Black bird yesterday! Spring must be here! Garden season is right around the corner!! Can't wait to plant my tomatoes!!! Thanks again BigZ for the seeds!!!

TO- I never thought of sherry to cure a chicken.....maybe I should have tried that instead of Tylosin....LOL! Those chicks of yours are adorable! Love the Moderns of course but that little multi colored one with them is beautiful!

WCc-Great score on the hay! Good job! Soooooo....Whst kind of tarantulas do you have? I love tarantulas but DH is terrified of spiders. When I have my pet shop I had two that were "rescues". They actually from the show Fear Factor. One season they had a tarantula segment and when they finished filming, one of the shows producers took two home. Needless to say, he did not have time for them and gave them to us. They were Pink Toes and he had them on the wrong habitat type. Si I gave them the correct tree like setting they love. They were fun!
My favorite is the Brazilian Black but those are so hard to find. The Mexican Red Knee is another of my "wish List" critters but since Dh does not like spiders I have to go with the flow. Those are the only critter I cannot bring home.

Jim-your Royal Palm is gorgeous!

Welcome MX!! I live south of Mad City too. Edgerton area.If you heed help give us a shout! Abendroth's is a great place to get chicks from. Rick is supper nice and very knowledgable. I'm getting chicks from him on Monday.

Well, I have more to say but gotta go. Dh wants to go somewhere.....I was not listening..to busy blabbing to y'all.....

SF-Thanks for the house pics!! Very beautiful house you have! Congrats on the new domicile!

DrH-cute kid pic!

Ok I'm going......

Good morning! All the chicken folks must be sleeping in....except a few! Finally got done reading after feeding assorted critters. Tommy has a hang-over from too much sherry...just kidding! His crop is still full though from all he ate when I brought him in. I am thinking it was bad judgement on my part to let him eat all he wanted last night...I hope it doesnt get impacted. I think I will take him outside today and let him walk around...he is sound asleep right now. That is the bad part about having a house chicken...you worry about them waaay too much!
So MXM--you've got to be pretty close to me--what town are you in? We all can certainly get some chickens for ya! THat is what we do best after all...I heard from KNAnders and the kids want to send a thank you note for the quail...he didnt say how many hatched or if they did...
Tom the mink cages sound fabulous! I have a couple that I have used that are all wire, and a few that are wire, metal and wood. The all metal one I am still using--I am not sure if the guy said his brother made it for mink or what--very nice cage though. THe wood ones need repair now...I picked them all up in the junk one day. Speaking of junk...I dont know if I mentioned that place I stopped at and asked about the dog kennel...well we went to get it in two trips--man is it NICE! There is only one pipe that is a bit rusted through on the bottom--easy enough to fix--it is one of the welded type like Lemke Fence in Jefferson makes. THe wire "cyclone" fence stuff is really HD. I think it might be even heavier than the kennel we had them put here when we first bought the place. ANyhow, I have all kinds of configurations running through my head about how to place the panels for the best set up. I think I will wait for the mud to harden though!
DrH--that picture of you is just adorable...did I say that already? What happened? Yeah I musta said it...I remember hiding under the chair....

I have to look through my pics and find one of my Royal Palm...he is a nice looking man for sure! I need to go out and feed the masses....talk at cha later! Terri O
