Today was a very long day. I started on the garden early (finally!) and after 10 I was back and forth between the garden and the store and the escape artist chickens. I repaired the fence around the back yard and blockaded the opening to the parking lot with some old lattice fencing. I moved the chicken tractor into the enclosure and took off one of the side walls so they could get in and out of the loft (with fresh hay in the nest box) easily. They got bored with the back yard and half of them hadn't laid any eggs before I moved them so they were anxious to get outta Dodge. The first to escape were those who hadn't laid yet. They were determined to get to the favorite nesting place I guess. Couldn't see where they might have been able to squeeze through the fence so they must have flown. Then the roo got out and he was fighting mad. I caught him and clipped his wings - that buggar is STRONG! At one time or another most all of them flew the coop. There's a low spot where the lattice fence is so I'm going to string some chicken wire across the top tomorrow and see if it helps.

In spite of the jail breaks, no veggies were harmed during the operation. I was able to get two long rows of tomatoes (3 varieties), 2 rows of squash (4 varieties), a bit of celery, marigolds and cilantro. Also seeded some lavender - and keeping my fingers crossed that it takes hold - I tried starting them twice earlier this spring and not even one seedling sprouted. Tomorrow the millet, pumpkins, carrots and corn go in - hopefully lots more! Pray for a warm fall!!

Sandi,, forget about the B Sprouts.. DD#1 got me 18 plants today.. but thanks you for the offer..

I worked in the garden today.. I "hit the wall" 3 times.. Sh!t !! getting old really sucks.. Plus having only 3/4 of a heart doesn't help either..

I picked a couple of wheelbarrow fulls of rocks.. those VW sized ones were a beotsh..

I double dragged to dredge up all the rocks I could,, then I rototilled and still hit a bunch more..

I am going to go back out and plant the beans and corn yet before dark.. I already dug out the planter and oiled it up and it is all ready to go.. wish I was..

is it OK to bank dirt up around corn stalks after they are about a foot tall ? I think I heard of this a long time ago,, never tried it.. seems like a good idea to help keep it from tipping over in a strong wind.. I had that happen only once in all my years of gardening.. and that was 2 years ago..

better get going before it gets dark..

......jimgoingtogohitthewallonemoretimetoday.........

You can have some of my rocks, too, Jim! I spent a lot of time raking them out of each row as I was planting. Some of them I'll use for the bottom of a raised bed but you can sure have the rest!! (Smiley face with a wink here)

well, I am all showered and smelling a lot better.. I got 2 rows of green and 2 rows of yellow beans planted.. then I planted 11 rows of corn.. the garden is 30 feet wide. so I think it is plenty of each.. i have enough seed left to double that,, maybe will plant part of the old garden down near the road for the relatives and friends to pick if they want to..
DD#1 planted a bunch of raspberries down there, so IDK what kind of room I have left..

I am going to try another picture.. that last one was a fluke..

ta Fin da, 4 week old Buff Orpingtons.. they are 6 weeks old now.. looking more like chickens every day..

Hi all--still sick. I sure hope it is gone tomorrow! The kids were here until 6:30. They cried when their Dad came because we had just started to make the GF strawberry/rhubarb crumble! I assured them that I would save some for them for tomorrow. OMG--whoever suggested that recipe...it was delicious! THANKYOU! I think I will make more tomorrow!

So glad to hear some peoples chickens are getting better and sad to hear that others are now sick! It never ends. I had a sad sight today too...the ducklings that hatched yesterday (4) were all drowned from the rain last night. I had put a doghouse next to the mama duck and the babies but apparently she left and they just stayed where they were...it was a very sad sight indeed. Everything else weathered the storm OK.

I have to go to bed...DH got home today, kind of scared me when he walked in because I wasnt expecting him until tomorrow!
OK--good night! TerriOsnifflingandsore

Quote: OH goodie,, save them and bring them to the bash next year.. then if I still need them, I will take them then..

I see you are planting millet ? got any tips for me ? all I have for seed is what Annie threshed from the cockatiel millet sprays.. have about a quart of seeds.. how much will that plant ?
do you use a planter of some kind ? or just hand broadcast it ? how would a lawn spreader work ? can you tell I know nothing about this ?

Baby bird food:
Cat/dog food soaked in water
Hard boiled egg yolk
Apple sauce
Calcium supplement (I used reptile powder)

Mix all together. I rolled it into balls and put it in the birds mouth when he opened it.

TO, I posted the strawberry rhubarb crumble recipe. Isn't it delicious? I never use all of my rhubarb, but I was out there yesterday scraping up a few more stalks so I could make one more pan.
