Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

As long as I'm here I have a question for you other Cheeseheads. Not long ago I had an egg and a golf ball disappear from the nest box. When I put it in the pest forum everybody insisted it was a snake. I find that doubtful in NE :/Wis in Oct-Nov. What are your thoughts? There is a fence completely surrounding the coop (8x11) which sits on a cement footing with a sand floor. I would easily see if something had dug through. There is an insulated wall right down the middle of the coop so something could have worked their way up into that for a cosy home.

Bigz it took almost a whole front shoulder for my memory to work then it went a lot faster. Get to go to the bank then shopping this morning. Getting fixins for a double batch of chili. Don't know if I'll make it today or tomorrow. It takes a full day to get everything to meld together. But will attempt to make some bread too. Then some chicken noodle soup and then... Should eat B'fast before I go to the store.

Have a good one!

Good snowy morning! The dogs had a blast when I let them out there. It seems like they are so amazed when it actually snows again...maybe they dont really remember year to year? At least the young ones dont! I remember when my kids were little how excited they always were...kinda miss that! It only looks like more work to me now...
Arrgh--you and me at the grocery store today DrH--actually I dont mind it too much--just the carrying in part and putting away part! I am going to the new Pick and Save in Watertown though...DH and I walked through it over the weekend and it is fabulous. I am also going to Ace Hardware to try, once again, to find an ice scraper. Years ago when I was working there I got one for 94 CENTS that was the best one I have ever used. Had it for years and years and now it has disappeared! It was just short with a brass blade...anyone know where I can get one? It seems like all the ones I have dont "fit" the windshield.

Any body else notice how white ducks dont look so white when there is snow on the ground? The only one that could match the snow was my old pekin boy...the muskovies look a little yellow. Buffo (the Orp that got hung up by his spur) has been laying with one leg back and one leg forward. Not good--I dont really want to bring him in but...I am thinking that he might have broken his pelvis. His legs dont seem broken or out of joint.....I guess I need to build one of those "chicken chairs." *sigh* Prolly should have one on hand anyhow...time to get out the sewing machine!

On a happy note...my new button girl is growing her feathers back! She looks like a little pink porcupine right now

She is probably growing them back in self defense...it gets pretty chilly in here at night! One of the quail folks on here have told me that they might do OK as a trio. She has only laid one egg so I guess I'll just have to see. BCC--do you ever see them mate? I am thinking that my eggs are not fertile--never saw the deed done!
Well--off to the shower for me....gotta get SOME work done before I leave! Have a fantastic day everyone! (and

Edited to add:Oh yeah...could have been a Pine or Bull Snake...depending how warm it was at the time...

TO Had to laugh at your porkyquail! Bet it is funny lookin. Couldn't believe your description of the ice scraper. I have one just like it and it has worked like a charm for years. If it was a snake bet it was sorry to eat the golf ball! After my trip downtown decided not to go back out unless needed. That wind is NAS T!!!! Man I'm turnin into a wus. Gettin dishes done then makin chili then more dishes. Love makin chili it takes all day and always an adventure.

the flock will be happy tomorrow, and I like the price. Speaking of price. we have a new tractor supply opening in shawano tomorrow. they also have boss for $9.99 for 40 lbs. Wonder what ever happened to the 50lb bags? Use to get them for $8. I know, I know!

Stay safe and warm..... ~ bigzio

I am just tickled pink to be in this Wisconsin forum. I got my 4 GLW (plus a rooster) early this summer and three of them are laying. The 4th (the heckled hen) is not quite developed yet, and I don't think is laying. I am thinking about getting 2 more hens this coming summer if someone nearby is ready to sell. I would like a different breed, but still a big bird so they are not picked on too much.

Hope everyone is staying warm with this snowy weather. Did not get much more than a little dust in Madison area so that was nice. I know it is already December but i am never ready for the cold and snow.
Ok so I adopted the 4 chickens about 5 weeks ago. A delware mix, a dominique and a red and a black sex link. they were supposed to be between 5-9 months but one of them I believe was closer to 12-15 weeks.. the black sex link is still developing its brown on neck and has no red on its little comb and almost no wattles with no color. Still too young. I beleive that the dom and the red are both laying for me. One started on day one with us and the other kicked in 2 weeks ago and is fairly steady layer.
I still think my delaware is a roo... but still young --- but looks like those tail hackles are forming. If so, it is going back and exchanged for a sure hen. It is a pretty bird, but we have them for eggs so will go back.
Anyway- here is a wierd question... do I need to train my birds to like scraps? beside bread products, they wont eat much else- I have tried squash, veggies, fruit, yogurt, scrambled eggs... they just are not much interested. crazy
I also have one that has loose stools- any advise? It looks like the cecal poops but is a daily thing rather than once a week so not sure what to do.

Hope everyone has their holiday shopping done. I just have to get some gift cards and i will be done. Thank goodness.

Evening all. It was a cold day out and that wind was raw as heck!
