Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

sunny morning

here, been a busy week. DS(9) is at 4-H camp till Friday...sure hope he is having fun! On Friday I pick him up and drop off DD and DS(12) for their camp till Monday.

We hatched out 8 quail on Sunday/Monday...my parents enjoy watching them...such fast little things..

We went ahead and ordered some Welsummer chicks from Cackle hatchery, along with 5 Golden Laced Wyandotte... they should ship today and get here Friday or Sat. so DD will have some new ones to work with as far as the Welsummer breed and will see how the other breed goes.

My parents are hanging out with us yet, just taking it day by day....like DH told them...no rush.

On a sad note, my aunt who celebrated her 100th birthday on June 4th 2014 passed away yesterday afternoon, her health started declining over the last couple of weeks...she will be greatly missed!

Best get the day started today...a few more units to get ready.

Enjoy the day

So sorry to hear h&r.
let the mommy duck and babies out today. They are not as quick as the baby chicks to learn to use the ramp back into the coop. Willnbe just hanging out today to ensure they do ok. I will attemptna picture :)

Quote: I also use VetRX..love it..

For showing I start conditioning 6 weeks before the show.
I bath them and dip them and put them in my indoor runs with clean bedding. I take them and feed them in *show* cages. I handle them every day and pull out wings to help them strengthen them. I feed the dry organic 22% game bird and do not ferment to keep feathers and faces clean. I add calf manna to feed. I trim beaks and nails and remove broken or bent feathers.. Each week I bath them and do an exam. I make sure all bones are correct, keels are straight, toes strong. I use a nail brush and scrub legs two weeks before. I make sure all nails, combs, wattles, are pristine and free from white flecks and dry skin, and leg scales are clean the week of the show.
For bathing I use the 4 tub method. Tub one is water. Tub two is soap, tub three is water, tub four is vinegar. I use vetrx on nares, legs, combs and wattles. I bring my own food and water. I do not feed the birds before showing. I feed after.
hi all, have posted WAy in the past, gonna attempt to be a "regular" we'll see how that goes. in southern wisconsin, 3 kids, oldest is 6 and a half, starting first grade this year (crazy) second is gonna be 4 in november, third just turned 2. Two boys and a girl. :) Then started hatching chickens last January (pretty sure cuz I can't have any more kids was my need to "hatch" something, lol) kids LOVED it. we went with Silkies, and have two cochins also. my oldest is in our local 4h and showed this year and had a great time.

ended up with 3 goslings from a swap, so now have 3 geese (which we have a big pond, if only they'd use it) have been trying to transition them down to it. got them down there, but only to the spring part, they won't swim in the entire pond yet... crazy things, want to be by us. love to sit below the deck and crap everywhere...

just got 3 belted galloway cattle, cow and yearling heifer and the cow is bred back with a heifer calf at her side. (all to potentially start a small herd and fill the freezer and sell meat/steers).

couple of dogs, old inside cat (15) and a young stray who gets "fixed" at our local vets spay special clinic next week.

and my husband who has stayed with me through all of this. :) do our own gardening, try to put away as much as we can in the freezer, getting some broilers next spring. anyhow, I like to read on this page a lot, thought I should contribute a little.... oh yeah, my husband calls my silkies my "gateway animal" as they lead to all our other animals (geese, cattle.....) lol

talk to every one soon!
Val

one more item.... our chickens just started laying eggs, woohoo! my kids fight over who gets to check the nest boxes daily.

Welcome to the group..I live in Racine co..are you close?

Well the chickies are all bathed and in cages. I just called and my son had things all messed up. He was trying to show our project bird which is not a specific breed but a mix and he thought he had it listed under other but didn't understand what it meant so they said he could still bring the girls in and they would point out problems and such. We are taking BLRW Hen and Roo, Speckled Sussex Hen and Roo and either a white or black Cochin Bantam hen. Wish he would of done the Buff Orps or the Lav Orp hen but couldn't get him to agree. We have to take them in tomorrow to set up as Judging is bright and early Thursday morning. This is our first time so wish us luck. lol. We are in for some major schooling here I'm sure.
Good luck and have fun!!

aww cute..

If you have any jubilee or black pullets available to bring to Portage (or to ship with my cockerel if you don't want to hold him that long) I would be very interested. Just let me know what you want to do.

Hi All!

I can see if someone post in the "other" general forums and blatantly advertises, however, in an area forum, among "friends" I see no reason not to mention that you have this or that for sale. Heck, we bend over backwards to help people get what they want or need from all over the state! We're people helping people get what they want and there is no reason that our little group should chastised for offering each other first pick of what we may have to offer. Finding out who has what for sale locally is one of the reasons I joined this group!

Oh well, Night All!

I agree. I guess I can see them not wanting anyone posting links from other internet sales sites. But if someone wants to mention that they have an abundance of a certain breed or a pet that needs re homing, I don't see the harm in that.
