Afternoon All...monthly meeting at Camp tonight, so no hunting for me tonight.
Great job with your flock H&R...you always seem to have a good solid management plan going!
Waiting to clean the coops here. Way to much molting going on to worry about it right now...feathers are picked up daily though...don't want to feed the feather mites, I heard it helps to pick them up.
I put plastic around one of my pens every fall...it's the covered pen, and makes it nice for the flock, as well as me...no shoveling...and the nice dry straw bed allows the girls to spend time in the pen most days.
My other pen isn't covered, and I have to shovel that one. I can deal with one like this for now. I do plan to make some changes in the future, so it's easier in Winter.....and please don't say bring it on....I say...stay away!...LOL

Wow--reading this article makes me want to make some capons! I LOVE a good fatty chicken....I think that is why I dont like to eat my muskovy ducks much...they are so lean...if only I could keep Pekins alive. I do have a new pair of Rouens...the lady at the garden center had them for entertainment at her place--the hatchery told her she could just let them go on the lake this fall and they would fly away. NOT--these birds are so big and fat they could NEVER get off the ground. I dont think many Rouens can fly? I am hoping for babies in the spring.http://www.raising-chickens.org/castrate-a-rooster.html
Keep in mind that this is much more difficult than castrating a mammal, since birds carry their testes inside the body cavity, and that it may be illegal where you live. Check local animal welfare laws before you try to castrate a rooster.
Here is the article that had me form my question. I'm glad you all get such a good laugh out of it. Here I thought this site was for learning new things, but instead it's just a group of people that were born with all available knowledge that can look down their nose at us pathetic souls.
The boys are trying to mate with the girls--totally normal. They "hold on" to their heads so they can climb up and do the deed.Hello! Today I got 2 ducks to add to my flock. 2 more girls so I have 3 girls and 2 boys. The new girls are sweet and scared. Unfortunately the boys are attacking the girls anytime they are near each other. They back the girls in a corner and pull at their necks. The new girls are as big as the drakes but they don't fight back. Is this normal behavior? What can I do to ease the transition? Thanks for your help!
At the rescue we fix all pups after they are 2 pounds. Cats are 1 pound. Easier on them, cheaper (by a lot) and easier on you. I think that many vets like to keep them intact longer cause then the anesthesia and surgery is way more expensive and they can also charge for the Pre op tests etc. More $$$ in their pocket. (Of course this is just my opinion) Un-neutered dogs do get a much nicer coat and a more heavily muscled frame. I dont know if that is worth it though.CS, get him nutered now so he gets his brains back. Intact males wander, and as far as I know it does not benefit the animal to keep it intact. The last thing we need are more unwanted litters of puppies.
I can tell you that there wont be any left! Too bad you didnt find the nest...you could have hatched out many more cause there are probably 40 eggs partially developed left in it! Guineas are terrible mothers...they just run too fast!Hi All!
Sclark.... Nice pics! Glad you sold your coop. Too bad about the bird.
Well, momma guinea took the kids to the garden before I could confine her. Wonder if they'll be any left in a couple of weeks.![]()
Night All!
