Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yep, the sharing of everything was important then, when everyone got along. I mean things like no trespassing signs, that were a new thing then, started about 70 or so and it changed feelings among all the neighborhoods.....something that will never return again..the good old days when everyone shared everything isn't goin on now is it? It had to do with greedy folks that didn't want help, or wanted to share any help to neighbors that had their back for generations.

So way off the topic. As I have stated before. I am pretty novice here. I have a 6 week old mixed breed chicken ( has 5 toes and is frizzle...... There was a silkie rooster in the coop and a frizzle rooster in the coop, but no hens frizzled or 5 toed) well.......he is crowing......at 6 weeks old. Am I crazy.????

State of WI stipulates that commercial animal products (including dairy) are not fed to swine, unless that animal is raised for personal consumption and never leaves the premises. So if you feed a pig waste products from a food manufacturer those pigs need to be processed on site, not at a butcher shop.

This supersedes federal law, which is more lenient.

Then of course, the commercial establishment has to keep track of where this waste ends up as well......

I worked for a feed systems mfgr . I had the pleasure of installing an automatic feeding system on one of your commercial farms.

I will eat one of my cheese, milk fed pigs any day before eating eating one of those guys.

FYI the butchering establishment I took my pig to didn't bother to ask me what I fed it.

Another nice chilly day today...not bad out there at all really. Yep, bl4 I think most folks that are feeding their swine table scraps and such are watching what they are giving them. I'm not sure how many farmers are actually feeding them garbage, but I'm sure their are some...heaven only knows what some folks do. Yep, the commercial growers that have their hogs on concrete is almost abuse in my eyes...that's not what pigs prefer, but are kept on 24/7.

Hard to say gurk...some hens do crow, and in a few more weeks you will know for sure if he is or not. I have quite a few adult hens with spurs....just sayin.

That's funny how old and what breed are your hens with spurs? Is it maybe one line?

Also I totally agree pigs and cattle should be raised as naturally as possible for their health and happiness. Same with chickens. Just because it's destined for the table doesn't mean it should be treated poorly in the meantime. If that wasn't what you were saying then oops but it's still the way I feel. How hard is it to give them some sun and shade and let them feel the earth under their feet or hooves?

Maybe I am missing something, but nowhere in that document does it say that dairy can't be fed to swine... it even excluded dairy products from the 30 minute boil requirement.

Unless whey is encompassed by the definition of Garbage as "petrucible animal or vegetable waste" - meaning that it can decompose or rot - which would then need to encompass grass, corn, soybean, or most anything else that you would feed a pig.

If I missed something in the document, I apologize.

Wisconsin state statutes supersede federal law. According to the Wisconsin regulation, “it is unlawful for any person to feed public or commercial garbage to swine, or to deposit or receive such garbage on any premises where swine are kept, and no swine having fed on such garbage may be sold or removed from the premises.” Garbage is defined as “putrescible animal or vegetable waste containing animal parts (includes dairy-based products),........

Commercial garbage would include waste products produced at a cheese factory. It excludes private household waste. So if you buy a block of cheese from the store and feed it to your pig, no biggie. If you purchase waste cheese product from a cheese factory and feed it to your pig, that is an issue.

We have a HUGE problem trying to get rid of our waste cheese and it really bites that we cannot sell it for feed due to WI laws. Federal law is different, but WI law supersedes it.

Anyway, back to chickens (I'll quit with the shop talk)....... glad the weather is going to warm up this weekend! :)
