Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning All,
I didn't get to bed till about 2 am, and was up at 8. I am waiting for Elaine to come by with Spunky the rooster.

Our fridge section isn't cooling, but it now seems more stable so I should be able to move the milk and other perishables back into it from a cooler
we borrowed.
Either by tomorrow night or Weds, we should have Pips-n-Zips!!
My first eggs ever hatched in a bator!

Well I just got off the phone with Elaine, she is on her way.

Have a great day all.
Carol

Well the seminar yesterday went well and we had tons of fun. I have 6 production red pullets left over so if anyone is interested, PM me. They will be 1 week old tomorrow and came from Abendroth's Hatchery in Waterloo. They are nice and healthy and 3 bucks a piece. Depending on where you live I can try to coordinate with dh to deliver them or we can try to work out a met up someplace. If you want to see pics of them let me know.

French Toast did a great lead in for me with her peepstakes and Nutrena info! My hubby is the Gamebird Rep and "poultry dude" for Nutrena here in WI. He wanted to let you know that on June 2 at 1 pm, he will be hosting a mill tour for Mad City Chickens and wanted you all to be invited to see how your chicken feed is made. It is at the mill in Milton WI (near Janesville). The only requirements are closed toed shoes and no pictures are allowed due to proprietary (sp) reasons. Mad City Chickens also would love to meet some fellow chicken addicts!
There will be a possibility that Ron Keen from UW Ag Extention will be there are well. More info to follow and if you would like to come, please let me know!

Thanks for a great seminar. My 10 year old loves the big fluffy duck she won. and the 4 chicks we got are doing very well. day 3 on our eggs in the incubator. now I have to start work on my coop addition. RH

I had 6 small batches of chicks (3-6 eggs) hatch in the last couple of weeks with 98% hatch rate. The last 2 chicks have had large navels and have hatched early. Worse yet, I had a call duck pip and then die overnight. I was tempted to help it because I helped the first one (there were only 2) but thought I would be better off leaving it till morning. It just makes me so sad! I've lowered the temp in my incubator so I hope that helps. I've also thoroughly sanitized the incubator I use for hatching.

Hey all, I forgot to tell you that I saw the first Bluebird on Saturday! Spring MUST be here for sure.......

Thanks a lot for the guilt trip bl4. I have a bunch of 1x6 scraps that were supposed to be new BB houses this spring. Guess what? No pies today but can blame the chickens, by the time I had enough eggs for 2 I didn't feel like making them. Did a bunch of paperwork instead. Noticed that I have to cut off the mounting bolts for the toilet yet. Then I'll be done...Ya done! Probably. WOW BBP you can't beat that hatch rate! Too bad about the call chick though. Sucks to think you might have changed the outcome but if you had helped it might have turned out the same. Just one of those second guessing things. otonoh you may be poor in one way but you'll be rich in another!

Took a walk in the woods too, don't think it'll be a problem getting the tractor through it.

this is my 3rd attempt to post a reply. I keep getting bumped off and end up on my home page.. I think my keyboard is going to die.. maybe it needs new batteries.

TO your fan should never stop running. if it stops and starts with your indicator light, rewire it so you bypass the switch...

Majorly bummed.... DH put in bid on house an hour after viewing it, thinking "it's in the country, she can have her chickens".. today realtor sends plat map and RESTRICTIONS... major problem...ONE dog OR cat OR other household pet her residence (we have 2 dogs and 2 cats) and absolutely NO livestock of any kind.

The committee that oversees this appears to be 3 family members (same last name, mother father son or sister and brothers or some such combination, and were the original owners - To run for a period of 30 years (signed 1964) and to automatically renew every 10 years thereafter. And if I understand it they are the ones that get to appoint who replaces another committee member. Only way to change anything is by majority of landowners vote. Sounds like I may have to wage a campaign... once we get there I will walk around the area and see what's goin on and then make a decision on how to proceed.

DH insists that most original land owners who bought into the subdivision are probably gone or no longer care... I told him if I have to fight to get some chickens I will (and I did want a couple of pygmy goats as well).. and what if they do still enforce the one household pet deal... what then??? Sheesh... emailed my realtor and said is this an HOA type thing? He replied no, it's just to protect the "integrity" of the property. Betting it's probably okay to spray herbicides and pesticides, which are way more harmful than a few critters... guess I was counting my chickens before .... *sigh*

Wish to God I shared DH optimism, but sadly I don't.

Hi everyone! Rough day, had two people pass at work on me. I love my job, but some days I wish wouldn't happen. So I came home and made chicken and rice soup with Bigzio's beer bread. OMGosh, that bread is good! And so easy! Nice crunchy/chewy outside and soft dense inside. So good to dip in soup. Ate more bread than soup, I'll have to go for a walk tonight so I don't gain 5lbs.

Thanks for the recipe. So I have a chick that's not doing well. I kinda hoped that if it was going to go it would do it while I was at work, but of course now I'm at home trying to nurse it back. Don't think it's working, but will keep trying. I think it's a vit deficency. It keeps walking in circles and shaking it's head. It's on the small side too. Ok I'm off to go for a walk. Later
Edited to say: I'm sorry to hear about the house issue. I wish that everyone could just have any animal they want (with in reason) on their property. Good luck with your campaign

No Jim it doesnt stop running...I unplugged it to make it stop. THen the temp dipped way low (96). I just tried it for an experiment. When it is running the temp is 100. Can anyone enlighten me on why my chicks did not pip? It seems such a shame to see all those babies fully formed but dead!

Did my first dog walk job today in Deerfield. Nice black lab type dog. I have to walk her 4xweek. Gets me out for excercise anyhow!
Making some Mexican stew for dinner tonight. Should be tasty. I have to go and make up some taco seasoning to add to it. IT calls for a packet but of course the one I have has wheat flour in it! More work! The storm delivered a trampoline to our pasture last night! DH and DD had to get it off the electric fence. I called 3 neighbors and it belongs to the last one I called. Of course it is brand new and the wind did a great job of bending it up according to DH. Ours is still sitting right where we left it! It is OLD though so very much heavier than the new ones!

Gotta get going on that meat if we are going to eat tonight I guess....talk later! Terri O
