Thanks for the great laughs--you guys do fine bantering in the morning! Must be before Jim gets mad at his puter! I would hate that Jim...we had dial-up before I did anything on a computer; I remember DH cussing it all the time. Your little blue birdies are growing by leaps and bounds....I suspect they will be laying by next week! (dont I wish)
My sign of spring is when I hear the spring peepers...they started last Monday night...of course they were pretty quiet last night with the pond iced over again! DH says 72 by Sunday? Cant really believe that!

I am having my 2 new 4Hers over tonight to meet the horse they are using for the fair this year. The girls are 10 and 11 so should be a fun time. I am having them help me clean out the barn isle too so we can get it scraped out from the winter muck. Then they will have a nicer place to work with the horse.
I talked to my friend that works at a CBRF and will be taking their roosters off their hands. They hatched some last year and have 4 hens and 5 roos! Needless to say the hens are a bit hassled! No idea what kind they are...probably just more mutts! (I like those kind!) I guess they are very tame though so maybe I will find a home for them.

Well, I am going to Trinity again today for the lunch...not cooking, just setting and serving and of course cleaning up! THen I have to shoot out to Deerfield to walk the lab. I better get moving and get my chores done before I have to go...man, a job sure cramps my style!
Have a fantastic day...get out and enjoy that sunshine! (I bought onion sets yesterday!!!!) Terri O

They look great for a first attempt! I'll do a taste test as soon as their cool enough not to burn my mouth. Called the guy that has been hounding me for one and told him he better get here right after work, after that can't be responsible. TO it's hard to keep up with that kind of banter going on, think I'm losing my touch. Can't wait to hear the spring peepers think it's gonna be a week or two here. Cool beans on the new 4H'ers I know they'll learn a lot from you, maybe more than they want. ie muckin out the barn. But it's all part of it so kudo's to you for doing so. Not having a job is not all it's cracked up to be sometimes. You find that there's much more to do than you imagined. But you get to do it the right way instead of making do for now. I HAVE to go outside before I burn my mouth!

Hi All,
Doncha love prepaid things....
Of course our internet and main phone are prepaid.... so they are down until Thursday- Payday...BLEH!!
tongue.gif

But I do have access via a cafe in town.
I won't be on much till Thursday though.
Got to meet Elaine for a short period yesterday, what a wonderful person!!
I should be going to her house tomorrow night to see if there are any pips.
I have to get my 30 gallon breeder tank cleaned and sanitized for the chickee poos.
And I am getting a ceramic heat emitter, it will be better in the long run.

Mr. Spunky is settling in with the frizzle hen and roo I got at the swap in beaver dam, so I have to add another 2 weeks of QT for everyone.
Not too bad though.
He sure is a calm guy when traveling... I had him in our small bonus room for about 2 hours.. he settled right in and started crowing.

Any hoo.
Laters, I will be on tomorrow.
Carol

Always hop on this thread and get a good giggle, nice way to start the day.

Thanks to all for the good wishes on the house deal. Can't remember who said what but: as far as contingencies, nope, went in with the ones DH thought were important, not critters! He's humoring me w/the chicken and pygmy goat thing

No, it's not as much land as I would have liked, but we've been looking for nearly a year and this one meets the major criteria (which sadly livestock was near bottom of that list) and at our age we don't want to go into big debt for the acreage I would really like. We are going to try to buy the 1/2 acre + lot on the corner next to us however, IF they aren't ridiculous on what they want for it. Which would give us over an acre, which would be nice and more than adequate for a small orchard, berry patch, raised beds and some chickens.

As for taking on the neighbors, we are on a dead end street w/3 neighbors (2 of who are actually part of our subdivision and one who is not and owns large acreage), who are a good distance away and they may not have a problem w/a few chickens, we'll see. In all there are 33 lots in the subdivision and maybe 20 have houses on them. If it means trying to change the restrictions, I'm up for that, if some neighbors are unhappy w/that, so be it. It's their unhappiness for them to deal with. It won't be the first time I've PO'd somebody and probably won't be the last, God willing!

Years ago I had to take on the powers that be in a small rural town to be able to dispose of my recycleable materials as I wanted instead of giving them to the waste mgmt company the town contracted with and to have a compost pile in my yard. Neither made some folks happy (especially the mayor), but in the end I got to give my recycleables to the man in town who made his living off reclaiming and recycling and I got to have compost piles. Eventually everyone got over their unhappiness.

I'm going to try to remain optimistic until I access what the status of committee is.

I intend to build at least one, probably more, for breeding pens. I'm in a quandry with free-ranging; I love and want my birds to free range the yard, but just can't have them everywhere and pooing on the driveway, it isn't very professional for DH's business (self-employed.)

Jim, we've had redwings, robins, killdeer, canada geese and sandhill cranes for weeks (17 mi south of Green Bay.) Bet they thought it was he!! froze over last week! I too am waiting to hear the frogs
love.gif
Was it BL4 that saw a bluebird??

Dk1, I truly hope you can have your birds. Maybe you'll spearhead the backyard chicken movement in Janesville?

DrH, stand down! Back away from that pie...that's an order, soldier!!!

just got back from voting. Not much to choose from for our town board members..

transferred 18 Americaunas and 18 buckeyes to the brooder..
still a lot of pips left. I had to open the door to rescue one that was stuck between the glass and a tray.

set up two fish tanks right away for brooders.. it will be quite crowded in a week, the way it is..

four turkeys laid eggs yesterday,, only 2 so far today.. and 1 more goose..

fixed my dike in the driveway for the anticipated rain coming..

I saw 2 robins at the end of the driveway today..

Hey everyone... I lurk alot and it is great bantering on here that gives me a good laugh.
Love seeing these spring birds- blue birds and robins and red wings are great. When do the oriels come? Need to get my jelly out for them!

Hoping to meet Carol this week- she is helping me sell my bunnies. What a great gal! We want to focus on the chicks and the bunnies are being neglected. I had figured the kids would love them so much, but every day they run past the bunnies to go cuddle and pet their chickens and see about eggs. Much more rewarding for all of us. Although my 4.5 year old son is one that runs past, but when I mention those bunnies going away, goes into hysterics about his bunnies and they cant ever leave us. Might have to add one more chicken that will be "his"(he names it mostly) to sooth that one over. My daughter already has her favorite chickens she loves. ANd of course DH has to pipe in that if we are adding another hen, it better be a good layer since we have so many requests coming in for eggs. So now I need to keep my eyes open for one hen, that is young and friendly and a good layer. Yikes.

On a side note... did anyone read the book City Farm? Really great book about feeding/growing and raising for yoruself in the big city. Some things were a little extreme, but overall a great book.

raimnel XL,white, please! Beer bread will be great with the soup tonight. Thanks Bigz! Amy tasted a sliver a little while ago much more better than any store bought, should have grated the lemon peel a little smaller, but it doesn't bother me!
